Another method is the use System Restore to the date before this issue happen, meaning before windows update.

Click Start --> Control Panel --> Search "Restore"
Select "Restore this computer to an earlier point in time." --> Click "Open System Restore"

Select the date/time before the problem pop-up.
This is safer method in most problem on the system after update, such as yours.


Edit: Don't worry about what you had done, as system restore will handle better than repair.
It works and the result is perfect, that is before the problem.

Edit 2: There will be restart after restore.
For safer reason, do the shutdown and turn on, as this ensure shutdown is correctly done.
Once you turn on the computer, you need to go to windows updates, first.

I can't find your advice on the Seven forum. I clicked on my email link to get here. I was following Roy's posts and about to "repair install", and decided to try the Restore feature. I did a Restore and everything is back to normal. The only concern I have is when I go the the Win. Update. How do I keep the creepy *KB3042058* from trying to install? There is probably going to be about 80 updates waiting for me.

Just run the Windows updates, mainly for security, bugs, etc.
If the Windows completed the updates, do it again by Start->Window updates.
This is to confirm that all the necessary updates are installed correctly.

As for KB3042958, read on.... as the rest is for your info.
Do a search on that KB3042958 is for Upgrade to Windows 10.
When i go Start --> Windows Update, this prompt me to upgrade to Windows 10, as i did not click "Get started"
There are several source / website that teach how to ignore or remove, which i follow.
But this update still appear when i run the windows updates.
So, just ignore it as it will have to get your permission to click on "Get started"

This issue was raised few days ago, where that a user complaint and sue Microsoft.
Microsoft lost and had to pay the user an amount to roll back to previous Windows, before upgrade.
It happened when this user (own boss of SME) encountered that only 1 computer was auto upgraded.
She complaint that because of this she had lost &or something, i can't remember now.

So long as not to click "Get started" on this upgrade to Windows 10, it is safe.
From this incident, the user have to click on "Get started" as approved to upgrade, although the file still exist in my computer.

Whenever you had a fresh install Windows &or just bought a new computer with Windows OS.

Windows Updates is TOP priority as most are for security, bugs, etc.
It is best to be done immediately after re-install the OS &or new computer.
Let it run, which it may take several hours, if it is re-install or new computer.

But for after doing System Restore, it is not that long.
I had gone thru both twice for 2 laptops that i had.

You may have to physically present, but sometimes not necessary, as it do have auto restart.
Just ignore that Upgrade to Win 10.

Microsoft did announce that this upgrade will be remove later, after end of this month for free upgrade.
So, in the meanwhile, do not click on the "Get started".
Some updates required your permission, and so it is safe to let the OS do the windows updates with priority.
There are some updates but not necessary, it will let you decide.

Just wait for a few hours to updates up-to-date, better than cannot be used for days, until fix.

The below are for your info only.
This is the way how i manage and do the necessary setting, and leave it.

1. Go to Start --> Windows updates. From here, do all the necessary setting first before do anything else.
2. On the left column, click on "Change setting"
3. On the "Important updates" the setting should be with the word "Recommended"
In the past, i would select "Download and let me choose when to install them" i found it is very troublesome.
Hence, i use the Recommended setting.
Do take note on this.
When you click on "Shutdown" and there is "update" stated, this mean that the update to be alone, without any interference.
But if you click the > for other options, this update is still waiting to be update upon Shutdown only.
When i notice this "update" in the Shutdown, i will do the update to avoid any problems later.
** As for the rest of the setting, read and make your own decision**

As for why it is not in this forum, because this system restore is for ALL Windows OS.

That's why i sometimes read on most forum, this method was never mentioned.

Basic reason. Each user has it own methods /way of doing troubleshooting.

Nobody like Windows / Microsoft, but many books on Windows/Microsoft are written by its staff, which i prefer.

after doing a restore i have lost use of my keyboard. it has power, but no keys work. using the onscreen one. can't get to the device manager. i have a ps/2 keyboard, that works. i need my usb keyboard to work. can you help?

Some updates which is important will be mark "tick".

Other updates are just optional, remove the tick mark, temporary.

In this way, it will shorten you updating process.

After totally updated all the important patches, security, bugs, etc.
Then need to check which optionally updates require.
Many others are fonts, languages, many more, which is not necessary.

Hence, it is better to set the Windows Update setting to "Recommended".
The OS will then decide base on your installed programs.

One Final Note:
Unless you have a good memory, then ignore this.

Do write down on the steps you take, so that you know at which point may be problematic.

Do you mean your computer has no ps2 port, but with only usb port.

You need to either
1. Get a changer from ps2 to usb. This means that using usb port on 1 side, the other ps2 for keyboard.

2. Get a usb keyboard. This option is better, as nowadays only have usb port, and multi usb connector.
I do few of this and that, keyboards, mouse, many others.

Wait.
What do you use to connect the keyboard previously.

If you say, there is power, but keys not working.

Remove the ps2 and check the pins.
This is because the one of the pins is loose, bend, which will affect the keyboard.

Hi Eric,

My usb keyboard has power but the keys do not work. I am on a different computer (Ubuntu 12.04) using Logitech keyboard. I have always had a legacy keyboard plugged in to my Win 7 box. Both keyboards worked till I "restored". No bent pins. Checking for updates has been running for 2 hrs. It's not doing nothing... I downloaded Logitech G11 keyboard drivers and still no keys work.

Can I get the updates manually? There are now 3 keyboards in the device manager, plus 1 ps/2 keyboard. I tried to delete them all, and reboot, hoping Windows would install the drivers. No it didn't. It just keeps searching for the drivers as its searching for the updates.

I'm lost, and i'm a poor typist too.
