WU hangs perpetually searching for updates

I'm having a problem with Windows Updates on Windows 7 64 bit. WU has been searching for updates for over 24 hours. I downloaded SURT and the offline installer starts a "search for updates on this computer" which also hangs indefinitely. Sfc reported no integrity violations. I ran the Fix WU tool, WUupdateDiagnotic, and reset WU components. Can someone direct me in finding a fix for this problem ?

First reboot your computer, then install KB3020369, if not installed.
    Then install KB3172605.

Windows updates should return to normal.

Thanks a lot! I had the same problem as the thread starter and tried most of the documented ways of getting WU back to work but KB3172605 was what solved my problem :)

Yes, KB3172605 appears to have fixed something because "searching for updates" finished and displayed the updates. I just hope WU can download and install them. Thanks so much for your help.

You're most welcome. That update includes a new version of the Windows Update Client which appears to have fixed the update problem.
