Welcome to Windows 7 forum.
You did not do any updates before!
First, do the "Change setting" on the left panel.
Under Important updates, select "Install updates automatically (recommended)"
For Install new updates: "Everyday" at "3.00AM". Do note that the time is when you are using the computer.
If not, it may not be able to check for updates. This will run in the background, and would not interfere on what you are doing.
As for "Recommended updates" and "Who can install updates" put the check mark.
The other is optional, for Microsoft products, if you do not have, leave it blank.
Now, select the current time you are using the computer (+10 mins), save OK and exit.
Do whatever you are doing, as when that time arrive, it will able to do the update for you.
Hence you no need to wait.
Do note that some updates may require to reboot, so do not do anything which required a long period of time.
This is for the updates to run as it reboot itself, with warning. After reboot, it may also continue to updates.
In this way, you do not need to check for updates manually, and may not have this issues.
