WIN Update Icon In System Tray Works Again After 1 Year

I had my computer set to notify me of available Important Updates, but not download or install them. The System Tray Update notification icon stopped working after the WIN 10 free upgrade was released, and I had to manually check the status for updates until this week. All I got the past year was the GWX Icon trying to get me to install 10.

I find it interesting that after WIN 10 free upgrade expired, my System Tray's WIN 7 Updates Available Icon suddenly works again after 1 year.

Fixed mine months ago by running some .inf file but I don't remember what it was. Also if notifications are working it means that it was fixed with during month's installation of updates and nothing to do with the end of Win10 upgrade offer.
You just didn't notice until this month's updates became available.

Most likely one of these fixed it last month:

KB3161608 - relaesed last month but pulled and replaced by:
    KB3172605

It's possible last month's updates fixed the issue, but it seems very strange that, if so, it was fixed to coincide with the expiration of the free WIN 10 upgrade period.

See this post from April 2016:

It's time for Microsoft to fix the Windows 7 update slowdowns

Mine has been working ever since. I had a few other fixable issues with windows updates (missing optionals that needed to be installed) but it's worked fine pretty much fine well before the end of Windows 10 Upgrade offer expiration. On the other hand problems did start around the time that Windows 10 upgrade related updates were released.

I too noticed that as soon as the Windows 10 free offer expired on 7/29 the very next day my windows updates icon tray was working again. It is because MS pulled the free offer for 10.

That was what I was trying to get across. The updates feature worked but the notification icon in the system tray to indicate that there were updates no longer did.

I eventually suppressed the GWX icon from the visible tray (it was in the hidden part of the tray) and when I just looked it is now gone. So like you said now that GWX icon has been removed the WIN 7 Update icon again works to show available updates.

    Hi,
Mine has always worked shortly after startup if Important updates are available
Never had any GWX stuff installed though os upgrading was disabled and I culled out all the win-10 related stuff from the last year of releases.
