    windows security only updates

Hello Everyone, I am just wondering if anyone knows why my ASUS pc is now having trouble with windows
updates. I do like to keep the pc updated, but every time I download and install a security only update
when I start my machine I always end up with the black screen for a while, and everything runs slow. I cannot find an answer to this. It has been a very reliable pc in the 3 years I have had it, only a few hiccups
because of mistakes I had made. The strange thing is I have a refurbished HP6005 Pro Quad AMD-Phe-2-x4 B95, with windows 7 pro 64 bit, and it has no problems with the updates, but I prefer the ASUS pc, not just
because it starts much quicker, everything runs quicker in it.

Hello Roy, Thank you for replying. I have run both the sfc /scannow and chkdsk on both machines. I will type here the results from the ASUS pc.
sfc /scannow Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
chkdsk 976657407 kb total disk space
    43225188 kb in 86013 files
    63292 kb in 22421 indexes
    0 kb in bad sectors
334511 kb in use by the system
65536 kb occupied by the log file
    933034416 kb available on disk
4096 bytes in each allocation unit
244164351 total allocation units on disk
233258604 allocation units available on disk.

On the HP pc there were no integrity violations either.

    Hi Ethel,
    i more to try
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
you may have to scroll down for the X64 version.

Have a look in device manager any with ! a small down arrow or anything showing as Unknown Device.
While your in it -- check if your Display Adapter is upto date.

    Other things that slow start-up
Adobe/Printers/Itunes/browsers/Asus and any other prog that you've installed - they all update at logon, you could set the service to manual or delayed

    windows update

Thank you again Roy, I have downloaded kb947821 for 64bit operating systems, downloaded and installed
with no problems. I will check for updates shortly and see what it comes up with. I have looked at every
device under device manager. Every device is working properly, and I click view to show hidden devices,
and there are no unknown devices. The only things running under msconfig on startup are Trend Micro
Internet Security and AMD usb. I have unchecked AMD but I leave Trend alone as it does not seem to slow
the pc down, and if I set it to delayed startup, sometimes it does not start itself up, and then I have to play
with it. I am still using AMD Radeon HD7480D driver 12.105.0.0 and it is working properly. If I update this
driver from AMD I have problems, and it is listed as the last driver on the ASUS website.

    windows update

Hello again Roy, Thank you for all of your help. I have come to the conclusion that the last 2 security only
updates that I installed November and December had caused the black screen issues. I will try them again
one day, and see what happens. I can only assume it is the updates as it is the only time I have the black
screen issues on startup. Once I uninstalled the updates the problem was gone. I do not have any adobe
programs installed, no iTunes, nothing much really. I never use any registry cleaner software, only ever
delete temporary files, windows disk clean-up sometimes. I only go on websites that I know are safe sites,
and my internet security has the green check ticks for safe sites anyway. I apologise if I have wasted your
time, I just thought there might be someone else with the same ASUS pc, and having the same problem
that I am having. I have noticed a few people with ASUS pcs having update issues, but they are different
    models to this machine.
