Windows 7: My Aug 9 update experience

My Aug 9 update experience

I've had a windows 7 computer for over 6 years, never having a problem with updates. On Aug 9 after being on line for a few minutes, I saw the update pop up that revisions were available. I've had the settings on 'let me see first' for a year because of the GWX that I didn't want. After checking the updates that they didn't include any 10 stuff, I clicked 'install'. Install was much slower than usual and I got a 'fail' on almost all. When I clicked 'try again', the problems started. Trying to visit sites slowed to a crawl while updates was still searching. Opened the 'resource monitor' to discover that svchost.exe - wuauserv [update search] was consuming 95-100% of the cpu I disabled wuauserv and reset search to never so I could have normal operation.
I spent multiple hours/days on numerous sites trying to find a fix. Tried 'restore to an earlier date, CHKDSK, MS fixit 50202.msi, MS fixit- windows update trouble shooter [fixed a few minor things] Be advised that this fix cleans out everything including any updates in 'hide' [I had the 6 GWX updates] and your last update date will show 'never', but my 459 updates were still installed.
To see if any of the fixes worked, I changed never search to let me see first. A few minutes later, I actually got connected but with an error code 8024402C Microsoft windows list of error codes under protocol talker errors is WU_E_PT_WINHTTP_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED the proxy server or target server name can not be resolved. And while wuauserv is consuming 95% of cpu and updates is running, my ISP connection status shows no sent or received bytes to/from Microsoft server.
I suspect that the problem is not with the computers of almost one million visitors to this site/update forum in only a week. I suspect that the problem is with the Microsoft Windows update server as per the error #
So I just read the 'simplifying win 7 updates' thread. It took them a year to realize that win 7 users didn't want win 10 and hid the 6 GWX updates. Any connection between the new 'simplifying' procedure and updates not working? The all in one update doesn't work for me. Looks like I'll be leaving 'updates' on 'never check'
As a side note- I know of someone who has a laptop with Vista, using Chrome, no virus program, never updated anything, using it for a p/t at home business and has never had any problems. And we're concerned about updates for an eight year old program?
