Here's my list of 99 "Bad KB's" for Windows 7. The attachment is a text file with comments for about half of them.

    947821 2823324 2999226 3054464 3075853 3084905 3107998 3138615

    958559 2876229 3014460 3060746 3078667 3088195 3112343 3139923
    971033 2882822 3015249 3064683 3080042 3090045 3118401 3139929
    976932 2902907 3021917 3065987 3080149 3092627 3121260 3146449
    2454826 2922324 3022345 3065988 3080800 3093983 3123862 3150513
    2505438 2923545 3029606 3068707 3081437 3099834 3124280 3167679
    2506928 2952664 3035583 3068708 3081454 3100956 3125574 3173040
    2545698 2970228 3042058 3072318 3081954 3102429 3126030
    2592687 2976978 3044374 3074677 3083324 3102810 3134815
    2660075 2977759 3046480 3074683 3083325 3102812 3135445
    2670838 2990214 3050265 3075249 3083710 3103696 3135449
    2726535 2994023 3050267 3075851 3083711 3103699 3138612

The convenience rollup kb 3125574 (which I list as "bad") contains the following "bad KB's" that are in the above list:

    2660075 2970228 3075249 3092627
    2726535 2994023 3078667 3102429
    2882822 2999226 3080149 3107998
    2923545 3068708 3081954 3118401

If you start with a fresh install of Win-7 Ultimate 32-bit (this might apply to 64-bit as well) and do not choose KB3125574 but take everything else offered by WindowsUpdate, then the following KB's will be offered to you that are on my bad list:

    976932 2726535 3042058 3092627 3167679
    2506928 2923545 3068708 3102429
    2545698 2952664 3078667 3118401
    2592687 2970228 3080149 3124280
    2660075 3021917 3086255 3138612

One other note: KB3161102 will irreversibly remove the "Windows Journal" feature/function from your system. I'm not calling this a "bad" kb because of the relative lack of use of that feature and it's well documented troubles as being exploitable by malware. If you use Windows Journal, then put 3161102 on your bad list.

Bottom line: If you avoid the 99 KB's in my bad list, then there are a total of 278 "good" KB's that you might or should want to download (or roll into an install image). This includes 107 KB's in the convenience rollup, some of which may not be offered to you through a WU session but instead would have to be downloaded and installed manually. There is one exception: KB2670838. It's called an "Evil update" but it is one of a handful of necessary KB's you need to update the system to IE 9 or higher.

As I previously said I don't bother much with updates can'r really see the point and I haven't noticed anything "unusual" with my machines. The GWX CP I mentioned weeds out the 10 stuff but what gets me is why is Microsoft putting out "updates??" that are causing such issues with peoples machines doesn't make sense - are they just using the exercise for the IT novices they have

    windows updates

Hello SummGuy, I just re-installed windows, and I followed your list of bad kbs, and it has turned out really
well. All the errors I had on startup are now gone, and the machine is starting up a lot faster. Thank you
for posting this list for everyone.

Well done Ethel now if you want a little more out of the machine and only if you want to of course - when everything is up and running try some of the tweaks from here Optimize Windows 7 just take your time if you are ot sure of anything and being a clean install I laways do this Registry - Backup and Restore keep that in a file somehwere you like I use the desktop but yu can keep it in docs just name it very recognisable because if you are like me (heaven forbid) I have heaps of stuff and often take ages finding where I put files

    windows clean install

Hello ICIT2LOL, Thank you for your advice. I will give the poor pc a break for a few days, and i will
look at optimising windows, and registry backup and restore. It is funny how previously I thought I was
doing the right thing with windows update, but obviously some of those updates made my pc run
crappy. I have now set windows update to never check for updates. I will only come to windows 7 forums,
and find out what is appropriate for this machine. I am afraid I have lost all trust in Microsoft. Another thing
I noticed on startup is I no longer have the black screen sitting there forever, now it is only about 2 seconds, which is nothing.:)

Yep take your time Ethel the reg backup is very simple to do and you always have the original then.

I set updates as per my pic that way you can view them before choosing what to download and install.

Personally I don't worry about the updates much these days unless they are security patches for Windows and of course any .NET ones.

If you go down the track of researching every one that they offer you could spend an awful lot of time doing just that - only to find perhaps you don't need it at all. My concern in the past was when the great free Windows 10 was being pushed out and keeping that stuff off my machines but I am assuming it is no longer the case but I do stand to be corrected.
Updates with 10 as you know are compulsory whether we like it or not but so far the machines I am running 10 on do not seem to have had any problems.

As for Microsoft I too am disillusioned because they seem to have cottoned onto the fact that other companies are becoming a major competitor hence the rise in what they want to squeeze out of us, and remain top dog

    windows updates

Hello again ICIT2OL, I will set windows updates back to check for updates but let me choose to install them.
I think I had a bit of a temper tantrum, because my Mister Asus, as I call my machine was playing up, and I know some of the updates on SummGuy's list were previously installed on this machine. I have stopped using IE11 which was always the fastest browser in this pc. I am giving Firefox 50.0 a go, and so
far it seems pretty good. From your earlier post I have done the same thing with files. Looking for them,
and thinking now where did i manage to hide that.

I've created a text file that contains lists of good and bad KB's for win-7.

Back in July and August I was working with RT7 to create a master install image of Windows 7 Ultimate SP-1 32-bit by integrating all possible update KB's that were available at the time, and avoiding all bad kb's that were being mentioned in various forums and user groups.

So what I have to do at this point is see what KB updates are being offered since I stopped updating my reference win-7 system back at the end of August, and of those see which of them have been flagged as undesirable based on any reports I can find on the net.
