"checking for updates" 24+ hours now! unable to get Convenience rollup
I did a clean reinstall of windows 7 on a Lenovo laptop and now Windows Update has been "Checking for updates" for more than 24 hours now!, I tried getting the Convenience Rollup but I am unable to! It tells me that my browser is outdated despite that I have the latest Firefox. I click "get with different browser" but it only leads me to the download center where it just tells me to go to Windows Update in control panel, the same place that has been stuck checking for updates for 24 hours now! Microsoft seems to make it impossible to get the convenience rollup. Even the IE only brings up general updates to Windows 7, no convenience rollup!
Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated |

Hi,
There are essentially 3 updates needed for a clean install of windows that will get you updated through April of 2016 KB3020369 & KB3172605 & KB3125574 all can be downloaded from the M$ catalog using internet explorer Microsoft Update Catalog https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/...ows-7-and-8-1/ To manually install them you will need to ensure the built in windows update service is stopped and disabled first. I also have all 3 updates on my OneDrive if you have issues getting the updates from the catalog. Oops forgot to add OneDrive link ![]() https://1drv.ms/f/s!AsjD7o6P3KLKj2TjShn8-SumV1rr |

I decided to shut down and restart the computer. Despite Windows Update telling me that there has not been any updates found, upon shutting down, there was 244 updates that it is installing. Problem solved. It is probably why it would not allow any manual installs.

Hi, I tried all your advise on the Microsoft site and could not get it
Hi, I tried all your advise on the Microsoft site and could not get it to NOT hang so as we said in the ole mainframe days, "clear core and reload"
point by YOUR point posted here. You say: KB3020369 & KB3172605 & KB3125574 all can be downloaded from the M$ catalog using internet explorer CHECK, THE THREE ARE ON MY PC FROM YOUR ONEDRIVE. Next, You say: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/...ows-7-and-8-1/ Oops! That page can’t be found. It looks like nothing was found at this location. Maybe try a search? not sure what this link is but using IE and Admin, I get: IS this link important since I can not get to it using IE 11 with Admin (used Admin for all of these instructions) Next, You say To manually install them you will need to ensure the built in windows update service is stopped and disabled first. CHECK, Windows Update SERVICES- DISABLED CHECK, Update Windows? NEVER RUN: KB3020369 -already loaded KB3172605 - now installing-COMPLETE KB3125574 - This one had issues. I has a different name and is actually according to the cat and mouse update, was ab AMD file with a long named and it put it in TEMP folder under AppData/Local/Temp , and was hard to find to execute. but found it and RAN it. I need this one as my HP uses the AMD driver. On Execution I get: The Updates are being install but.... it took about 30 mins BUT DID COMPLETE That is 1 already loaded, 2 LOADED. DONE 1. You may want to add that some of these take a long time and one gets impatient when you just went through days of HANGING/ 2. If they are not familiar with the ONEDIRVE download by IE, my IE put one of them in the temp unexpectly and did not tell me where it put the downloads. I had assume IE put them all in the same folder. 3. Be careful with the SERVICES and the UPDATE to "never". After several attempts, Windows in its infinite wisdom, changed those settings back to what Windows wanted so ever attempt I made, every execution of the files, I had to go to SERVICES and UPDATE to make sure Window did not change them on me. THANKS TONS. 130 |

Hi Jagman,
That is odd usually downloads in ie11... will go to your downloads folder where you can extract all from the zip folders and run the updates one by one But yes the traditional updates settings changes have been failing to stick for many people so they do need to stop and disable the windows update service manually = not sure why though :/ All that matters is you got it working finally ![]() Cheers. |
