    Hi,
Clean installing has been an issue for a while this was started in January :)
Still works but is out dated update client wise

But yes is a workaround but Ken goes into details as to why you might find interesting.

just a small note in that Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320
Latest windows update agent version is 7.6.7601.23453

Check for these and try installing manually if missing (in order) with reboots after installing update.

    KB3050265
    KB3065987
    KB3102810
    KB3135445
    KB3138612

    KB3161664
    KB3020369 (required to install KB3172605)
KB3172605 (replaces KB3161608 which was pulled and contains latest WU Agent)

    Hi,
I believe the offending update client is now in your hands Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320 so says Ken
So if you find out why you're on the right track :)
He says it's a hopeless cause.

I like your thoughts and approach.
Most users of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 are not techie enough to go through all the manual methods.

What they need is a KB that just fixes the problem starting from the root of the problem.
No patches or work around. Earning back the trust we all use to have in Microsoft updates would be a great thing for Microsoft and their customers.

I personally believe this update problem started with the giveaway of W-10.
I know my system updates are in a mess caused by me running away for all the W-10 garbage.

As far as I know you can't automatically get the latest WU Agent/ Client via daily scheduled windows update (self update) checks. I stand to be corrected but you need KB3172605 to get it and it has pre-requisites including SP1 and April 2015 servicing stack update.

April 2015 servicing stack update is an optional update so users who don't install it will not get the latest WU Agent/ Client.

Callender comes up with a lot of neat things and ideas. Most of them in my opinion were not intended for billion plus of Joe and Jane low tech using computers.
In order for the billion plus of Joe and Jane users the answer in my opinion must come from Microsoft in a download and install KB.

Mike you and I plus a lot of other members have been going through this update nightmare for a year. It must be even a bigger problem for I.T. department and thousands of computers under their control. What a mess Microsoft has created. Microsoft needs to fix the problem and do it right the first try. No more KB's fixing KB's fixing yet another KB.

I want the good old days back when we could trust Windows updates.
Simple; select all the security updates without research and pick and choose the optional updates.
Then download and install, reboot. Done and back on my way to happy computing.

Am I dreaming or have I had to much coffee?
