THANKS - Problem solved (at least for now)

Downloaded and installed the two updates and my Windows Updater started working again after being lost in the wilderness for the last three months. I had similar problems back in February, fixed them thanks to advice on this forum, but for some reason this summer the problem reappeared. But now the updates are downloading and installing as they are supposed to. Thanks to all the experts and others who take the time to put helpful information on this forum. I really appreciate your dedication.

    3) Make sure KB3020369 is installed if not manually install it this is the main article page with all versions,
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3020369

I was running windows 10 and my hard drive died a few months back.
I bought a larger HDD and reinstalled everything back to windows 10 and everything worked great.
A few days ago, the laptop got corrupted somehow and I had to reinstall windows 7.

Now I can't windows update to work at all.
I am taking this thread slowly.

Firstly, I set windows update to never update and rebooted.
    I checked that KB3020369 wasn't installed. (It wasn't)

    I downloaded the file.
When I try to run the file I get the fault "Installer encountered an error 0xc8000247"

So I can't even get past the first hurdle.

    Any help and advice please?

    Thanks

    Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Please take note of post #2 on page 1 again and make sure the windows update service is stopped and switched to Manual before attempting to manually install any updates

I know I don’t have a lot of expertise on this board but as I’m part of this thread I thought I might jump in. First the guys and gals here are really helpful. If this post needs to be moved please do so.

Regarding Goodbhoy post, #52 in this thread. Goodbhoy mentioned his installation of Windows 10 became corrupt and was forced back to Windows 7. In this situation I would first ensure two things, one your memory is clear of errors and the Harddrive does not have any bad sectors. You did not mention any diagnostics, if they are done skip down a couple of paragraphs.

I would boot with memtest86+ found here Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool and run a memory test for at least four hours and if I had the resources I would do I complete full format of the installed hdd on another machine to ensure there are no sector errors overlooked by a quick format. (Data copied off.)

Then I would skip the Windows 7 install unless that is your targeted environment. If you plan to run Win 10 you are going to need to install Windows 10. Not sure if there is an upgrade path in Windows 7 but as you have to install fresh why not go directly to Windows 10.

You can get the correct version of Windows 10 here Access Denied 10 and can create the USB to install it in one go. When asked, do a clean install, no repairs or upgrades. If you have been running Windows 10 for anytime your license, which sounds like it was originally 7, has been fingerprinted on the MS servers and it will activate your Windows 10.

The link you provided doesn't seem to work.
I didn't realise you could do that.

It was a Windows 7 machine to start with then upgraded to Windows 10.
As Windows 10 is no longer free and I only had a set of Windows 7 disks, I assumed that I had no alternative but to go back to Windows 7.

    Is that correct.

No mate unless I am terribly wrong you can still get 10 free since you did upgrade from 7 to 10 when it was a free upgrade because it would have "used" your 7 code for want of a better term to activate 10 that would have been the generic key.

The ISO can be got from here HeiDoc.net: The Technology Treasure Chest just be sure of what version you are downloading and if it were me I would also download a spare 7 ISO of whatever version you already had.

Now I do stand to be corrected on this though and you could post a thread on the sister 10 forum regarding what you can and cannot do now - see the Ten Forum listed at the top of the thread page - you just need to sign on like here to access it :) .

As a by the by I did the upgrade on three of my machines and all have the key for 7 and 10 embedded so that I can flip in a drive with either system on it and use that OS Again I stand to be corrected.:)

Here is the corrected link. For some reason a space was added between windows and 10. May have to copy and paste. This code is right from MS

    Access Denied

Not sure why legal link to legal activity is "Accessed Denied". Need to copy and paste. I will re-read rules. Search windows 10 media creator. Only use Microsoft site.

In essence you are not getting Windows 10 for free. You gave up your Windows 7 license and MS will continue to provide software. Your machine was fingerprinted in the process so they know who does and doesn't have a license.

(Modified) MS is still offering a free upgrade to 10 for those using "Assistive Technologies" who qualify. Search Microsoft and Assistive. Just make sure you get to a MS site. Sorry about bad link in first post.

To be clear, this offer is ONLY for those persons using "Assistive Technologies".
Use by anyone else doing so because s/he missed the extensive offer period for the Win7/8 "free" upgrade would be considered fraud or piracy.
(I am NOT at all saying that such fraud applies in this particular case. I only mention it for anyone else casually viewing this thread.)

    Cheers,
