Some of the patches are using a Standalone Installer. When they are engaged, it searches for updated files, and that's all it does.

In order to get the needed patches to install manually, if WU is already in the "checking for updates" vortex, one needs to first temporarily disable WU. Otherwise, it will just remain in perpetual "searching for updates"....

So, the steps are:

1) Manually download the correct version for your architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) (but do not yet try to install):

KB3020369

KB3172605

2) From the Windows Update applet, turn it off (change to "never check for updates")
3) From services.msc, change the Windows Update service to "disabled" AND STOP the service
4) Reboot
5) Install KB3020369, reboot
6) Install KB3172605, reboot
7) Change Windows Update to "check for updates but let me choose...."
8) Change Windows Update service to "Automatic - delayed start"
9) Manually check for Windows Update

It ought to work OK now.

At this moment the windows is receiving 213 updates. It is now installing updates 157 of 213. I am letting it run until the end.

My question: After reboot, the system will surely ask me to install updates, should i install them all or there are some cautions?

On another thread, you advised to run a Windows update reset at completion , do I need to do the same. What a Windows update reset achieve in fact? I have not rebooted my computer yet since following all of your excellent advises. So far so good. I am waiting for your reply to the above question.

My system is set to "check for updates but let me choose...." Item No 9 is now in progress.

So it sounds as if installing those 2 patches got WU working again?

As a general principle, for a smooth experience, it's usually better not to try to install MANY patches all at once.
It might have been better/safer to do them in batches and ~chronological order (older patches first):

• Critical and Important security patches first
• Important, non-security patches next
• .NET Framework patches last
• {Recommended and Optional patches only as needed, and as they apply to one's system}

That's why most of us use the "check for updates but let me choose" setting.
It allows a bit more control and makes it easier to troubleshoot in the event of problems.

But, to avoid mucking things up, I guess it might be advisable to leave things as they are for now.
I would have INFINITE patience during this process and be prepared for at least several requested reboots along the way.
Do NOT use the computer for other tasks (even web browsing) while it is updating.

No, a Windows Update Reset ought not to be needed now, if everything is working OK.
