    Hi MoxieMomma,
Looks like a good plan, except, I get an error message (0x80070422) if the Windows Update Service is not running. And, if I try and run KB3172605 (KB3020369 is already installed) the standalone updater comes up, and just sits and spins, looking for updates on the computer. At this point, nothing seems to be working.

This is because Update is running. It is important to set Updates to never check for updates then restart your computer. This will assure that Updates in not running when you download and install KB3172605.

You can rest updates to what ever you would like later.

    Hi pbcopter,
"Never check for updates" was the answer (as you probably already knew). But, being the computer illiterate that I am, it took me a while to locate and turn off that feature. I've always suspected that updating manually was the way to go, and this latest go round confirms that. Appreciate the insight and expertise.

Ran the scan as suggested, came back clean. I had run a scan a while ago, but it doen't hurt to run another for verification.
    Thanks

Still problems after installing the two KB patches

In 2016 I had turned off Windows updates on my computer because I didn't want Microsoft to stealthily install Windows 10. Miraculously, I have not been infected by the curent ransomware.I have successfully installed the patches KB3020369 (already installed on my PC) & KB317605. I then changed the Windows Updates parameters to "update automatically". On the history list of updates, however, there are tons of updates marked "Echec" = French for "Failure" – (even though I chose English as the language in which to install the two patches). There are 98 important updates and 6 facultative updates – that Windows updates will not install. I have tried several times. Are all these updates included in the two patches? Should I be worried?
