    Windows update failing 0x80070424 error

    Heya,

I'm using Windows Home Professional 64 bit and have had trouble installing updates. Going through the steps nominated here produced the following:

1: Attempting to run SURT from the linked download produced an error:
    Installer encountered an error: 0x80070424
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

2: sfc /scannow came back with:
Windows Resource Protection did not find and integrity violations

3: Attmepting to check for updates produced an error:
Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.

    4: CBS.zip attached as instructed

Elsewhere I found a suggestion of making a copy of files, registry entries from a working install and inserting them on the busted windows, but I only have one PC running Windows 7.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi Hammer,
    No zip attached?
In the meantime run the fixit from this link.

    Hey

Mightn't have clicked all the things for the attachments, should be on this post now.

Fixit was not successful. Says Update Services not running, Problems installing recent updates. See screenshot attached.

I'll reboot and re-run fixit a few times and see what happens.

    Thx

    Hi Hammer,
can you try this SURT alternative, copy/paste the results.

When was the last succesfull install of an update?

Have you recently been hit by malware?

So after rebooting it did an update which then let me run the other updates I wanted and reinstall the .dll I needed. Fixit still produces the same results however, and Windows Update in the Control Panel, instead of popping an error and refusing to budge, just sits there searching for updates but not finding any or finishing it's search. Left it running about an hour.

Windows Update says I last updated in September 2012.

The alternative to SURT came back saying it found no problems.

I am not aware of being actually effected by any malware, but my kids also use the computer in question.

On booting I'm now getting an error saying that Network Shell is not working.

So, I've gotten over the trouble I was actually having but some of this seems like I prolly want to sort it out still. I might try re-running SURT as some things that produced the same error code worked now, so fingers crossed.

FYI: SURT runs now, but like Windows Update just sits there doing nothing forever.
