I installed the first "Intel" update (see my previous post) because I thought I needed it. I can't find it to do an uninstall. It didn't have a KB number.
Now I know to ignore them and I always use drivers from manufacturers websites and not Microsoft. Not sure why I installed this one

They can change it up and keep posting it, if you look in your hidden updates you`ll notice that update is in there once even though you`ve hidden it twice.

I went to Microsoft Update Catalog and I enteredinto the search box. It gave me four pages of search results. AFAIK all of the download links on the list are pointing to the same .cab file that's 58 KB in size. So I opened the file with WinRAR to look at what's inside the file. There are no .sys files in there, just .inf files. Opening one of these .inf files with notepad reveals that it's just "yellow-bang removal and branding".Code:intel system 10/3/2016 10.1.1.38
A yellow-bang is an exclamation mark inside a yellow triangle that will appear in Device Manager on a device if there's a problem with the device. For example if the device couldn't be identified it will be displayed as "unknown device" with a yellow-bang overlay sign on its icon. The "unknown device" problem in Device Manager can happen if, for example, the motherboard chipset and CPU are newer than the machine.inf file that came with your installation of Windows.
So what this optional driver update does is it fixes that by assigning the null driver (non-existent driver) to those specific motherboard chipset and CPU related devices that do not have what's known as a "function driver" because they either are "raw devices" or are not used on the system. For related devices that do have a function driver, this optional driver update simply refers to the machine.inf file, that already is present in the Windows installation.
The only other thing that it does is it replaces generic names with their respective Intel branded ones. So it just cleans up the names of the system devices, the way they are shown by Device Manager. Nothing either totally special or strange happens with this one IIRC. But I don't have any yellow-bangs in my Device Manager so I hid the update (twice) anyway just in case. Going by the description info on Windows Update Catalog site, the update would appear to be aimed mainly towards Lenovo users who forgot to install their Intel chipset driver. (Not me.)
So I just wound up with this in my priority updates today. I haven't been in the habit of looking too closely at them in the past year (shame on me) but strange things are afoot on our machines here tonight so I'm extra cautious. It apparently was posted on March 11th for me, despite the August 2016 date. It just didn't look right to me; good thing I Googled it, the last thing I need is a can of red herrings when I'm already dealing with a widespread "mystery" ailment. I want to do more than hide it, I want to have it nuked on site so it has no chance of slipping by anyone.
