Windows update and standalone installer stuck

just did a fresh install yesterday and im having trouble getting windows updates. i left the machine on overnight and when i came back in the morning, it was still "searching" for updates in windows update. i saw alternative solutions online including downloading the "SP2" for win7 and installing manually via the standalone installer, but that appears to be stuck as well.

    any suggestions?

additionally, the windows update process shows up as "explorer.exe" and not "wuauclt.exe" under task manager

the standalone installer shows up as "wusa.exe" though..

as to the first issue i am also encountering it and working on how to solve it.
To install the standalone installer you will have to stop the windows update service. For that,go to CMD and log on as administrator. Enter these commands then
    net stop bits
    net stop wuauserv

Also choose never check for updates in windows update. This will help you to install the standalone installer package

Yes,the windows update process is shown as explorer process .
