rosa The Activation Code shown in your report is for computers made by a large manufacturer & the computer is sold with Windows 7 pre-installed. Windows 7 was not released until 2009 & your computer shows it has BIOS dated 2007, which is about 2 years before Windows 7 was released.

So your computer could not have been sold with Windows 7 pre-installed & that makes your current installation non genuine. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer & SLP stands for System Locked Pre-installation.

You will need to see if you can buy another copy of Windows 7. They are now becoming very hard to get. Do not buy one from Ebay or similar websites as they are very often pirated & just as bad as the one you have now.

Someone else of this Forum may come in & advise where you can get a new one as you are in the US. You cannot use your current Activation Code as it will not work on your computer, even with a new copy of Windows 7.
I had Window 7 on this computer previously. Actually, I had a dual boot--XP and 7. The Windows 7 worked with no problems until I reinstalled it, though I didn't have the original Window 7 that I originally installed, since the disc was damaged. So I downloaded a copy, thinking it would be fine with the

I don't want to use another operating system since so many of my programs are written for Windows. Is there a way to find out if there's an update for the BIOS? Perhaps that might help?

The first thing you need to do is buy a legal copy of Windows 7. Then install and activate it.

rosa. The only thing you can do is follow AddRAM's advice in Post #7 & buy a new copy of Windows 7 from Newegg. There really is no alternative if you wish to keep Windows 7 as your operating system.

If you buy a new copy of Windows 7 from Newegg it should come in a sealed plastic case & be complete with a Activation Code that will be legal.

Newegg is only a suggested point of purchase as they seem to be one of the few that still have genuine Windows 7 available. If you have a trusted computer shop nearby you could check with them to see if they any genuine ones available, but you really do need to be able to trust them as there are a lot of rogues out there.

I was not trying to do anything illegal. If you read my post, I had a legal copy of Windows 7 but the disk was trashed. I spent this afternoon looking for a way to get another legal copy and couldn't find anything that wasn't OEM.

Newegg, like the rest I've looked at, has OEM copies, and I think you said no OEM copies would work. I often make copies of disks that I buy, just in case the original gets trashed, so maybe I have one around here someplace, but I doubt it.

To answer some other questions, the computer was built several years ago by someone now deceased. I installed Windows 7 on another partition sometime after that with a legal non-OEM copy.

I guess if I can't find another non-OEM legal copy of Window 7, I'll have no choice but to install a different operating system. However, I still have a question as to the BIOS. How do I find out if there's an update?

Thank you for getting back. OEM is quite OK, it's the SLP part that makes your current one illegal. I must apologise if I have confused you, but be the info below should help clear that for you.

There are 2 types of OEM. The one that Newegg have is OEM System Builder, which would be used by say a local computer shop assembling computers for their customers. This version can also be used by people such as yourself for re installation. It is not as good as a full retail version, but it's all that's available at present, as Microsoft have stopped issuing any more Windows DVDs. This type of OEM will work on your computer.

The other OEM version it the one you have which is the SLP one & that means System Locked Pre-installation, which was used by large computer making companies like Dell, HP etc., that marketed a computer with Windows 7 already installed, usually with whole lot of other software as well. This OEM SLP version can only be installed on the computer it came with.

Updating the BIOS will not fix your problem, as the Windows 7 Activation Code you have, will not legally activate on your computer, no matter what you do.

You mention that you might have a copy of Windows 7 around somewhere. It's not actually Windows 7 that you need it's the Activation Code that's needed.

So to cut a long story short, buy the OEM from Newegg & install it & your troubles should be over. Just make sure you get the right version. According to your System Specs you are running Home Premium 64 bit.

Whoever said that OEM wasn`t legal ?

All that Newegg and any other seller will have is oem, you will never find a retail version of windows 7 and you don`t need to.

And Newgg doesn not have Home Premium, the only thing they have is Windows 7 Professional, or Windows 10.

Buying an oem from Newegg will come with a legitimate COA and key, and install dvd.

@Ranger, what do you mean oem is not as good as Retail ??

It`s the same exact thing, the only difference is, he will get no support from Microsoft with an oem disc, and he doesn`t need that anyway, nobody does.

As far as the bios goes, you have to see what version and date yours is, then go to the motherboard manufacturers website to see if they have a newer version in their support and downloads sections. But updating the bios can be done later, it`s not important right now. You need to install an Operating System.

Until you can afford to buy windows, just install Zorin OS 12 Core.

Where you get or what disk one uses is not the question or the problem.
You can use a Microsoft supplied DVD or download a ISO.
OEM System Builders is the exact same DVD or IOS as Retail.

The difference is the COA key used to activate the system.
Their is not a Retail or System builders Windows 7 that uses a SLP COA key for activation.
SLP key are only used by major manufactures . Examples would be Dell, Acer or HP.

Only the Retail version can be move to another computer and it can only be used on one system at a time.
Retail versions of Window 7 are like hens teeth to find.
OEM/OEM System Builders will be the only ones, as far as I know that one will be able to find.
When installed and activated they are locked to the first computer that was done on.
They can not legally be moved to another computer.

This will explain things for those who want to know.

If you are using accessibility, win10 is available.
We are not restricting the free upgrade offer to specific assistive technologies. If you use assistive technology on Windows, you are eligible for the free upgrade offer...
committed to the continued improvement of built-in features like Narrator and Magnifier as well as the accessibility of experiences and apps like Cortana, Mail and setup.

The snag is the win10 upgrade app requires a processor with NX support.

That is odd, because win10 itself doesn't require that.
