I have tried the SFC scan which shows no problems.

    Error code 80070490

I have been struggling with this for a while now, before there was a different error code and I had to replace files in winsxs and suchlike, now finally it looked like it was working and I have a new Error code.... please help.

    Hi Haelu,
I think you did more than just replace a few entries, lookin at that log.

Your best bet is a repair install/factory reset.

well the log is incomprehensible to me.

But this is pretty much a fresh install. All I have done is followed advice on this forum, and maybe other places to fix whatever Update errors came up regarding SP1.
I really need to update to use programs which I use for my work.

Please if anyone can just tell me why this error is coming up and what I can do about it.

When I run update it seems successful until it restarts and then it fails

    Ah thanks for the help.
I ran KB971033, restarted and tried the update and it just did the same thing. Same error code.
I'm trying to download the iso now...

So, I'm not really familiar with boot discs. This is the first time I've dealt with any of this stuff, only because my hard drive died and I had to reinstall windows from my old CD.

Will this iso act as a fresh install of windows with SP1 added?

    Hi Haelu,
    it certainly is.
copy what you need from your current install.
Change your BOOT order to look at the CD drive FIRST,
pop it in follow the instructions that appear on screen.

Now to reduce the number of follow on updates.
look at this link Thrash's post (no2)
Windows Update will not update and I've tried multiple fixes
