Windows Update not checking for updates automatically

I've read the Windows Update Posting guidelines, but my question is so straightforward, and admittedly NON-critical, that I'll start by simply posting the question:

On my three-month-old Win 7 laptop I have Windows Update set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." On my two older Win 7 laptops this works fine. But on the newer one, it appears the only way WU will actually check for updates is if I do the check manually.
I should point out that once I know that there should be updates available -- based on the "updates are available" icon showing up automatically on the other two machines -- I've never waited more than 3-4 days before going ahead and checking for updates manually on the new machine.

Any ideas why this might be happening and how to fix it? Could the fact that I have Office 2016 on the newer machine (only) be having any impact, since -- as I understand -- it does Office Updates automatically? Also, this is not simply an issue of the updates-available icon being hidden.
