    Windows Update Error 80070490


    Hi,

    First post here. I work with seniors helping them with computer issues and this one is on an HP Desktop WIndows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I only help him about once a week so any suggestions may not be attempted for a few days. Windows Update gives error 80070490 when trying to install kb2922229 and kb2871997. I have run the System Update Readiness Tool and the SFC and tried to repair it by doing an "upgrade" with a Windows 7 install disc per Microsoft's instructions. Nothing worked and the install disc I used to repair it was not one that came with his computer and I got a message stating the running system was newer than the disc system. That may be but the steps did not mention that could happen so I don't know what to do about it. I haven't done it in a while but maybe I could slipstream an install disc to make it newer than his running system??

    I attached the cbs.zip file. It listed many corrupt files but I don't know which ones apply to windows update. I did some research on Microsoft's DISM but evidently it won't replace corrupt files in a running Windows 7 system...only in Windows 8. I'm wondering if I made a system image of his computer if DISM would be able to manipulate the image to replace the bad files then I could restore the image.

    Before tackling the windows update error I had loaded Norton 360 and used Norton Power Eraser (didn't work) and then the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool (NBRT) to remove a bug called "Trade Terminal by Global Trader". It now appears to be a clean system.

    Correct me if I'm wrong but an HP restore to factory gives no options to repair a system.

    I hope I posted this correctly and any help would be appreciated.

    I'll post a fix protocol later when I've finished work.

    In the meantime, please run the CheckSUR tool and post the CheckSUR.log file.

    Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
    (you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

    Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
    The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

    Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your OneDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

    Thanks for your reply and any attempts to help. I don't have a OneDrive folder so I have attached the CheckSUR.zip to this reply. I have fixed other Windows Update issues but this one is a hard one...not much out there on it. Thanks again.

    Ok, thanks! I will try it by downloading the ISO file. I've worked with those before. The install disc I had tried was a copy of a retail box dated 2009 with a number...X15-60499-01. The ISO downloaded is X17-59883. Are these numbers indicating mine is an older version? That's the message I got when I tried it...that the running operating system was newer than the one on the disc.

    I see in the steps that I can unzip the ISO file and run setup w/o burning a DVD...is that right? I will burn the DVD so I have it but I was wondering.

    At any rate I will try this ISO in a couple of days but it may not be until next week. His computer is running fine it's just that Windows Update doesn't work. Thanks again and I'll let you know when I finish this process!

    You can create a bootable USB and run the install from that - but as far as I know, it's not advisable to attempt to run it from a hard drive.
    Yes, the X15 is a marker that shows that it's the RTM version of Windows 7, whereas you need the SP1 version - which is why you gat the error.

    problem Solved


    Running the repair with the downloaded ISO file worked like a champ! I thank you for helping me figure this out. I just wish Microsoft would have provided more of an explanation as to why my installation disc was "older than the running system" and where to download these ISO files. Oh well...it's fixed and I now have another resource. I downloaded and burned the ISO files for Win 7 Pro and Home Premium 32 and 64 bit for other folks that I help in the even I need them.
