Windows 7: Error 80073712 when installing monthly security updates

Error 80073712 when installing monthly security updates

I've been having problems with windows update for several months now (using Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bits): I can download and install most updates, except for the security monthly quality rollups. When I try to install these, windows update seem to download them up to 11% and then reports that installation failed, with error code 80073712. Kept putting off dealing with this, but the latest ransomware attacks finally prompted me to action.

So, I've tried everything described here (details below). After nothing worked I tried to download the updates from Microsoft Update Catalog and run them as standalones. This also failed. Looking at the windows update log file I saw, in addition to error 80073712, several other error numbers: 80248014, 80240022, 8024000C, 80070490. (I'm attaching the log file below). I am not sure what to try next...

So here are the details.
  1. I ran the System Update readiness tool.
  2. I ran sfc /scannow, and got a message that "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".
  3. I also tried Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth (log file below). I tried to run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth (as recommended in the above link), but got an error 87 message "the restorehealth option is not recognized in this context".
  4. I tried, as recommended in the link above, to run the Microsoft Fixit 50202 prior to SURT.
Following advice found elsewhere in these forums, I've also tried to install KB3020369 and KB3172605, and to clear the windows update cache. None of these solved the problem.

I am attaching below the following:
  • windows update log
  • dism.log, CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log, after running the dism.
  • is a copy of the zipped cbs folder. It is too big to attach, so I've uploaded it to one drive:!AtaynxLXF4vhbGIJbsmHI9n2gPQ.
I'd like to stress that some updates are being dowloaded and installed (e.g., I recently had no problem when installing KB4014565). Also, the security updates fail even when I download and run standalone installation files.

I would greatly appreciate any help. I would really rather not have to re-install the operating system if possible. If any other information is needed please let me know.

Thanks very much!
