SURT will not stop

I have not been able to successfully update my Windows 7 PC in over a year. The Windows 10 update kept crashing my PC so I finally turned off Automatic Updates. Now I am trying to update Windows 7 and I am following the instructions in the Windows Update Posting Instructions post. I downloaded and ran the System Update Readiness tool (SURT) at 9:00 this morning. Over 5 hours later it is still running, the progress bar is still spinning. I finally clicked "Cancel" to try something else, but nothing happened. The SURT is still running.
Is it safe to shut down my PC? If I reboot in the midst of running SURT is it going to brick my PC?

Also, what do I do now if I can't finish running SURT?

Thanks.

Hello CD mate personally I would just hit the machines reset button because five hours is a way too long for that to be running.

There are a lot of updates problems I am finding anyway especially for the 7 OS.

I would suggest after you have reset the machine your shut it down leave it for a minute or so and reboot into safe mode and run these they may not be the right thing to do but it will check your file system out and hard drive sectors etc

I am sure you know how to get to safe mode but Justin case tap F8 on boot.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker - Windows 7 Help Forums
Disk Check - Windows 7 Help Forums < if necessary include the /f switch and if this does not make any improvement then just run this switch instead /r in the command line as per Option2
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs – you can leave out the /r switch in ckdsk if you feel it not necessary
