Windows Update error 80073712 (no luck with SFS, SURT, etc.)

Hoping very much that this isn't a "reinstall Windows" issue... BTW, my forum profile system specs are up to date.

Wednesday, I checked Windows Updates and got the "Windows could not search for new updates" and the error listed is 80073712.

I have tried several things. Among them:
  • I have run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt and rebooted several times.
    • Each run resulted in "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."
    • I am attaching my zipped CBS.log. FWIW, the string [SR] does not appear anywhere in it.
  • This may have been a poor call on my part, but I found a reference to an MS tool, EasyFix (MicrosoftEasyFix50202.msi) that I ran. I think it was supposed to clear clutter from the WU database. I am wishing I had waited on that. FWIW, I had tried all of the other steps below before trying the EasyFix.
  • I have run the System Update Readiness Tool (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu).
    • Each time, the "Windows Update Standalone Installer" asks if I want to install a Hotfix for Windows (KB947821, image attached). I say Yes and it downloads and installs something, pausing for a couple minutes near the end of the progress bar, then giving the "Installation Complete" message and leaving me with the option to close it.
    • If I try to run Windows Update and check for updates after (per this MS link), I get the same 80073712 error as before.
    • If I run the SURT msu file again, it happily goes through the same process.
    • I have attached the CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log files.
  • I have tried running DISM from an elevated command prompt without much luck.
    • Any of the following ...
      • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
      • dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
      • dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
    • All result in Error: 87, "The cleanup-image option is unknown."
    • Note that the DISM version shows as "Version: 6.1.7600.16385" and "Image Version: 6.1.7601.18489". At the command prompt, ver returns "Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]".
    • The DISM.log is zipped and attached.
Any advice on a next step is appreciated. I was actually hoping to ghost the SSD drive on this system to a larger one, as the current one has fallen below 20 GB. But, I don't want to do that with WU not functioning.

BTW, there was a typo in the subject line of my original post. SFS should have been SFC. Apologies for that. Apparently, I can't change that on my own, but I would be happy if a mod could.

Well, no replies so far. If there is some information I forgot to post or if there is some other thread that already solves my problem, please let me know.

Hi MrZork.

I know very little about solving the problem you have but I did do some searching on your problem.
I did look through the logs which mean very little to me. Reason being; I'm not a expert. If you wait long enough someone who has the proper knowledge might drop by.

Every place (forums) I went to which had the same members this forum has had one answer.
Do a Clean Install.

Some information that might help those with the proper knowledge.

What security, tunup, cleanup programs do you use?
Do you use anything from IObit?
Do you have any Restore Points before this problem you could use?

As per you system specs.

Just having 20 GB of free space could also be causing all kinds of problems.
Windows 7 like around 10 to 20 % of free space to work properly.
Windows 7 needs a little elbow room to do things.

Before you do anything wait a little longer.
I'm going to request some help for you back at the ranch.

ThrashZone, thank you for that suggestion. I downloaded the Dism++ 64 package, let it update itself. And then ran the scan as suggested. It found a .NET update to install and installed it (see attached image). After that, I rebooted the machine and ran Dism++ again for another scan and it says, "Computer has already installed the latest updates."

However, when I run Windows Update and "Check for updates", I still get the Code 80073712 error.

Hi,
fwiw you can probably use the same tool for a clean install and might take some of the pain away :/
It's either that or a repair install then use the tool

I guess the Repair Install is my next step then. I was hoping to avoid the potential pain of reinstalling drivers, which I have heard can be lost during a repair.

Thank you for the link to Dism++. That will save some time.

Hi,
Driver wise you're build isn't too much different than mine and drivers are all on asus's site
Although I'm on 2101 bios since I do not have a new series cpu just a 5930k.
I did load 3505 but bailed on it to 2101.

I was on 0216 factory bios for ever

I tried starting the repair install, as per the link. But, I keep getting an error and the process stops.I have attached the screencap of the error below. I have restarted and run the installer with that same result twice.

I am not sure which log files might be useful to post, so I have attached the latest CBS.log.
