Windows 7 Pro 64 - Windows Update Service Missing
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit --- Windows Update service missing
I am unable to run SURT so I await further instructions on how to report this.
Background:
End user was attempting to upgrade QuickBooksPro 2014 to QuickBooksPro 2017.
This kept failing. The cause seemed to be that .NET 4.6 could not be installed by the upgrade process.
I went through the Windows Update list of Important updates and found KB2538243 which is:
“C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)”
I then went through the Windows Uptate list of Optional updates and found:
“Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB2901983)”, and
“Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.1 for Windows 7 for x64 (KB3102433)”
I then selected all these updates and started the update.
ALL of these updates failed with error code 643!
The Application Event log for each failure showed:
Error 997. Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.
At this point, I need to say that there are NO temporary user profiles on this machine.
I recommended that user contact Intuit for QuickBooks support.
The Intuit tech left the following note for me:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/947821/fix-windows-update-errors-by-using-the-dism-or-system-update-readiness-toolI tried the first link but it refused to install giving the 643 error.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/949104/how-to-update-the-windows-update-agent-to-the-latest-version
I then tried the second link. There were a number of failures which I can summarize as follows:
a) System error 5 has occurred
Access is denied
net stop bits, net stop wuauserv, net stop appidsvc,
net start bits, net start wuauserv
---all the above commands failed in this way.
b) Entry point for DllRegisterServer was not found
regsvr32.exe mshtml.dll,
regsvr32.exe shdocvw.dll,
regsvr32.exe browseui.dll
---all the above commands failed in this way.
c) Call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 80070005
regsve32.exe wuaueng.dll
--- the above command failed in this way
d) Module not found
regsvr32.exe msxml.dll
regsvr32.exe gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32.exe sccbase.dll
regsvr32.exe slbcsp.dll
regsvr32.exe initpki.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe wuweb.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32.exe muweb.dll
I have not as yet attempted to reset the security descriptors.
Because other hands have been in on this and I don't know what they did (except remove the Update Service), I'm at a loss as to how to proceed.
I've scanned the PC with Malwarebytes 3.1.2 PREMIUM -- nothing found.
I've scanned the PC with msert.exe -- nothing found.
There are NO temporary user profiles on this machine.
HOWEVER, there is one "foreign" folder in the C:\USERS folder named "dub_cm_auto".
It contains a the following folder path chains:
.\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\ <empty folder>
.\AppData\Local\Temp\ <empty folder>
.\Application Data\NPE.exe
I suspect that NPE.exe is a Norton app to erase all installed Symantec products.
This folder is NOT referenced by the system registry.
I surely would appreciate some guidance here.
Thanks...
