Windows 7: Replaced HDD with SSD W7 Ult won't activate.

Replaced HDD with SSD W7 Ult won't activate.

My step-daughter bought a Dell Inspiration 6400 with T2130 processor when she studied in the UK and later bought a W7Ult upgrade disk and I installed it for her when she returned to Thailand.

I now have that Laptop and have replaced the HDD with an SSD. I made a bootable USB from the Upgrade Disk and did a Custom install. It wouldn't activate.

I talked to Microsoft and went through the activation process with them. Result he said this is an upgrade disk and you need to install XP Pro first. I did explain all but he was adamant. I don't have the XP Pro Disk.

I understand his point but the fact that I had bought everything legally now seems unfair that a failed HDD makes my purchases invalid.

I have genuine W7 Ult (X64) on my other laptop and tried that key but it said you can't use it on this computer. I also don't have a W7Ult (X86) DVD or bootable USB.

Is there anyway out of this other than find an XP Pro CD and do as he suggests. Any point in trying MS again.
