Older Toshiba laptop now tells me W7 not genuine

I have an older Toshiba laptop that has decided to tell me that W7 is no longer genuine. It was fine 2 months ago when I ran the last security update. Windows Update is functioning as it should, took just a couple of minutes to find current items. No trouble installing them, and is now up to date. Thanks in advance for any help!

edit: I did try running the online validation tool, without success.

There seems to be a problem with internet time syncing with the NTP server. I did a manual adjustment, don't know if that's part of the problem. I do know that I replaced the cmos battery back in April, so that much is right.

    Hi Dealerman,
that can affect its status, but i think not in your case.
the new MGAdiag will confirm if the system time is correct

it appears that the reinstall you performed 21 july this year has corrupted the licence file.

please follow the instructions in the screenshot.
    REBOOT then rerun the tool

the licence status should change from notification to Licenced.

No luck. I'm wondering if the heavy use over all those years from the prior owner have taken a significant toll on the hard drive. I've not run a disk check on the hard drive in a long time.

    Hi Dealerman,

some progress there, NOT a lot.
The new error code means its unable to read the BIOS correctly.

Go to Toshiba's website and see if theres a later version, your currently on 1.40,
Update it, or if its the latest version, then you should use the key on the COA sticker
    Either way
    REBOOT
    rerun the tool.

Many thanks Roy. The only snag I have is that the COA sticker has long been in the wind. The good news is that I have a saved Belarc file for this very purpose (unless that info isn't the same as what I need). Either way, if I can't get it to work, I'll put Linux on there and have some fun.

I'll keep you posted, good, bad or ugly... :)

Well, round 3 is a draw. I need to have a battery installed to flash the BIOS. Aah, the joys of owning a second-hand laptop. I've seen a few posts about using a '/forceit' command, I might have to proceed in this manner. Or, I could just do a fresh install. I'm leaning toward the latter, just to see how it responds.

I've been knocked out in the 4th round. A fresh install, and a call to MS to try and activate that way, finally ends with no success. The tech tells me that the product key has run out of activation attempts. The laptop is still usable & functional though. I'll probably put Mint on there and give it to my Father-in-law to use.

Torchwood, many thanks for your help!

    Hi Dealerman,

GO BACK TO MS, request level 2 tech
first point only tend to read from a script

There is NO limit on a OEM base install key, THEY DONT EVEN SEE IT, comp self validates
COA, Retail, System Builder, and Enterprise version -- Yes
COA/Retail/System builder is 1 computer registered/activated>>> at the same time<<
Enterprise depends on how many were purchased.
