Windows 7: Error 0x8007007E during Windows 10 Update

19 Dec 2017   #31

Windows 10 Pro

Also, if the download crashes, then, the upgrade assistant updates itself and you have to start over.

7 all of them MSDN sub

Worked for me. Did the start/off network/back on network.

I reinstalled the OS last night and fought updates all day. So glad I do backups. Went back to pre-reinstall and kept things clean.

May get taken down/removed if it gets downloaded a bunch. Hopefully Microsoft will release a fixed version soon and before that happens. Scan and validate at your own risk. This is not any W10 code.

Mods: My apologies if I missed a rule about this, if so, please go ahead and delete / remove and I won't repost.
Tjohooooo, working like a charm, thank you!

Here's the copy that worked for me (make sure network is disconnected until the actual download starts)

does anyone have the ESD file and can upload it somewhere? I have a shitty 20 mbps connection on site and it takes ages to download

Windows 10 x64

Just wanted to say thanks for the download - the bug was driving me nuts, but with a bit of fun and games (was fixing this remotely for a friend!), I got it up and running.

If you have already gone through the download and got the .esd file in the folder, if you unpack the zip file into c:\Windows10Upgrade overwriting the existing executables, disable the network connection / disconnect from the network, and run it, it works perfectly well with the latest version of the Win10 image, without having to download again. As mentioned earlier in the thread, as long as it gets past the checking for an updated version of the Windows 10 installer, it'll work fine going onwards, but will complain bitterly if it doesn't have a network connection after the initial check.

(I ended up writing a batch file to use netsh to disable the network connection, running the upgrader, waiting for 60 seconds, re-enabling the network connection, and then remoting back in to finish the job... nothing quite so fun as knowing you might not be able to reconnect afterwards!)

Edit: Typically between me hitting reply and typing that up, jpopo replied with the proper solution. Glad the reason has been nailed down!

As jpopo already said, the solution is
replace C:\Windows10Upgrade\wimgapi.dll with the one from C:\Windows\System32\wimgapi.dll

Disconnect network, either unplug ethernet or airplane mode for wireless
double click on the attached file. It will create the folder and attempt to update the app.
It will timeout after 5 seconds or so. When it gets to downloading the update, plug ethernet back in
Sit and watch the download happen, verify, and install. Worked on 32bit Win 7 Pro.
Job48's downloadable ZIP file did the trick for me.
