    Is update KB4056894 necessary

Recently I installed this update via Windows Update. When I tried to restart the computer it got as far as "Starting Windows" but no further. So I used my backup software and its rescue disk to restore Windows 7 back to a usable state.
Today I ran Windows Update and it lists this update as having failed. However, it does not present it for a second attempt.
I am wondering if this is because there is now no point in installing the update. Do I need to make a second attempt or not? I bought my computer to use rather than to nurse, so it would be good if the answer were no.

This security update includes improvements and fixes that were a part of update KB4054518 (released December 12, 2017) and addresses the following issues:

    • Security updates to Windows SMB Server, Windows Kernel, Microsoft Graphics Component, Internet Explorer, and Windows Graphics.

The fixes in the update are absolutely necessary to protect against the Meltdown vulnerability, but there are so many issues right now that it's best to hold off especially if you have an AMD or older processor.
