KB 4076492 Fail - Unknown Error
Hi All,
Update KB 4076492 continually fails with an unknown error, it is the only update that fails, all other updates install without issue.
Followed all the steps on the Fix Windows Update errors page except the last:
- Windows Update Troubleshooter found and fixed two issues, but this did not resolve the above error.
- Couldn't rename software distribution backup folder - Access Denied
A few days ago, the day before the update first tried to install automatically, I had reset the CMOS battery while diagnosing the PC power cycling which I later determined was a DIMM slot failure, and subsequently reset the date and time in BIOS/UEFI. The error seems to appear while trying to create a restore point; does this depend at all on the BIOS/UEFI date and time and could resetting it have caused this issue? Does Windows Update create a restore point for all updates? If it does, all updates should be affected, but only KB 4076492 is. Is it likely that a System Restore could resolve the issue?
If I already tried to Fix Windows Update errors, I presume resetting Windows Update components won't help anymore since it does the same thing?
Whatever it is, I am hardly convinced that reinstalling Windows like suggested in the last step on the Fix Windows Update errors page should be the only solution.
Any advice appreciated.
