Automated phone system for activation (UK) is dead?

I had to reinstall Windows 7 Professional (full retail, boxed version) due to a corrupt sys file. I chose to install onto a new hard drive so that I could recover my work.

Apparently I have 3 days until automatic activation. I clicked that and the Windows Activation window said:

"The Windows 7 Professional product key you typed is invalid for activation."

This happened the first time I installed it, but I was able to use the automated phone system to activate Windows 7. Although I don't know why, considering it was brand new and sealed.

This time however, when I ring the number (0800 018 8354) there is no ringing, just silence, until half a minute later and then I get "beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep".

I tried the toll number and after another half minute, an automated reply said "sorry, there is no reply from the number you called."

    What can I do?

It should all still be working as Windows 7 is still in extended support - It may have changed number so it may be best to follow the full (slui.exe 4) procedure.

Looking around some of the microsoft sites there does appear to be some issues presently with the activation system

The best I can do is point you in the direction of a site suggested to someone else with a similar issue to you

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus/

Hopefully they can help you ar at least connect you to someone that can

    EDIT

With a little manipulation of the above URL I have found a similar UK based site which should be more useful

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/contactus/

There should be a "speak to a real person" option as you go through the wizard

Once you get Windows 7 activated, do a full image backup of your computer, so that you will be able to do a restore of an activated copy of Windows 7 in the future.

Its a retail copy, not OEM and was sealed (plastic case with a blue cardboard sleeve). I bought it because its supposed to have unlimited installs on the same machine.

    Hi Jez2k,

well the first thing that hits.

    its NOT a retail install
the product type 8 is a COA key from an OEM computer.

The seller has lifted the key from an OEM, ie Dell etc, and packaged it for sale as genuine.
The other giveaway is that this type 8 key also requires a SLIC table to be present - you have not

The only way your sytem could have previously been activated is via an activation exploit, likely included within the install media, (CD).

MS has also picked this up which is why you got that error message.

Unfortunately your only recourse is to chase the seller, to get your money back, and offset that against the purchase of Genuine install media

You could also inform MS who MAY provide you with a courtesy genuine key, unlikely to be W7, if he is still selling.
