    Hi Efdy,

Seems you're still having issues. Have you tried uninstalling the January rollup? A lot of these update issues seem to have started since January. You could try uninstalling that one and then see if the latest one will install.

If it still doesn't work then the Repair Install option is always a good option for fixing many problems. It's actually not as painful as you might think. It usually keeps all your personal files, settings, drivers. I've used it before and the only things I had to do after were set up my Windows sounds/theme again and download and reinstall the updates again. Everything else was kept.

It will take a couple of hours, but if it's your only option then it might be worth giving it a go. Make sure all your files are backed up before.

You can only start a Repair Install whilst you're logged in to Windows. Remember that you must pick the Upgrade option and not the Custom option or it will start a new install. Fresh install is always a last resort for me.
Oh, Hello, man. I was making a post while you were, I reckon. Thank you for these suggestions. I will try all of what you said. I appreciate the help and the encouragement about doing a repair install. I feel less afraid of trying that already just from reading your words.

Um, I haven't read through the repair install tutorial yet. Is there anything I need to know that it doesn't say because of having a dual boot thing going on, or should that not really have anything to do with trying to do a repair install for the Windows 7 Ultimate x64 OS?

Also, can someone who knows please look at my MGDiag report thing in post #2 of this thread and reply to say if my OS is legitimate and like maybe if it also is a kind/type/whatever of product that allows me to do a repair install? Thanks.

[Edit: Brds7t7, regarding your suggestion above, am I meant to uninstall only the January rollup update thing, but leave the one from February installed, and then only try to install the April rollup update thing, but not the one from March? I know that's what you said to do. I just want to be sure. Sorry to be tedious about it. Thanks]

I'm not 100% sure when it comes to dual booting with XP. I haven't used XP on a system for a few years now. I do still have XP in a Virtual Machine, but it very rarely gets booted up now.

I would post in the repair install thread before you go ahead with it. I can't say for sure if it'll leave your XP partition bootable.

Also, can you open up control panel -> System and check your product ID at the bottom. Look at the second set of digits, does it say OEM or does it have 3 numbers?

With regards to the update removal, I would try removing the February update, then rebooting, then try uninstalling the January one.

Edit: Don't worry about the product ID, I just noticed in your MGAdiag post that you're using a Retail version of 7.

Hello. Thank you for the reply. Sorry about asking a question about a tutorial I had not read yet. I apologize for being irresponsible that way, but thank you for the advice you gave. That helps.

    No need to apologise

Brink's tutorials are very thorough and cover a lot of questions/issues that may arise, and things to be aware of before you go ahead with it. Somebody might be able to help you better with regard to the dual boot issue. It might not affect the XP partition at all, but I'd rather not tell you to just go ahead with it and then cause you even more headaches.

I've always found Repair Install to be pretty good when it comes to fixing issues. It'll remove all the Windows updates which is a bit of a pain, but in your case it could fix the issues you're having.

I would try the Rollup removal first though and see if it fixes the issue. Hopefully removing those and then installing the April rollup might fix things. Plus it will contain all the security updates that will be missing.

Let us know the outcome of that first.

    Efdy,

Please do let us know whether your removal of old Rollups or Repair Install has solved the problem. I'm eagerly awaiting ....

Just a quick headsup - the April rollup reappeared in my update list again today, so it might have been reissued.
I always hide them on patch tuesday as I use the Security-only updates. So, if it's reappeared again today it's more than likely been updated and pushed out again.

Might be worth doing another check for updates and try to reinstall once more before trying anything else.

I guess it might have been more apparent weeks ago that a repair install was necessary if not for the common problems relating to the March Security Monthly Quality Rollup even for some who didn't experience whatever it was having to do with NIC something or other. I apologize to anyone who may feel their time was misspent exploring alternatives to repair install since this thread was started. Thank you all for helping me.

I ran chkdsk, I think it's called, on the computer where the repair install will be done and did full scans of both desktop computers using Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for April and Malwarebytes with everything checked including scan for rootkits whatever those are. There was nothing found by either type of scan, so I kind of doubt anything like that contributed to the problem.

At least that computer seems to function mechanically and electronically. Hopefully that will continue to be the case, and repair install will be enough to get things back in order otherwise.

I will close this thread now and move these concerns to the area of Seven Forums dealing with repair installs. I suggest to anyone else who posted to this thread after experiencing the same difficulty when trying to install the March Security Monthly Quality Rollup that you start a thread in which you may receive assistance dealing specifically with your affected computer system if you haven't already done so and wish to seek further assistance from Seven Forums members.

Thank you all again for your kindness and consideration in helping me deal with my computer malfunctions. I really appreciate it.

Efdy, I hope you can write back / report whether doing a repair install can allow you to install those Rollup updates successfully. I failed the April Rollup (after failing the March ones).
