KB4099950 for logical nic drop connection

First, I've searched on these KB's and found some information but nothing like what I'm looking for. I'm at bit lost.

I've have an issue w/my main Windows 7 64b for over a year now where it drops the internet connection. Constantly. Logical nic as I call it. Perfectly fine when I run this machine using other OS's, including Windows.

So I was amazed when I recently read MS rolled out KB4099950 to solve this issue "resulting from SP1". Read you should install kb4088875 and 78 beforehand. I can backup and give these a go but I read in these forums that some people are skipping kb4088875, a cumulative security update, while others say they are only installing security updates. Well they're both security updates AFAIK.

My bigger question is: kb4088878 apparently is for Spectre/Meltdown problems. I only have AMD chips. Should I install any of these? All three? Any idea if these will cause problems?

I'm only concerned about my "nic" issue on this machine. I'd very much like to not be finding I can't uninstall an update, finding my main machine broke, or dealing w/a restore.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I suggest that you do one of the following things, in the order I have listed them below:

    1. Try installing different versions of the NIC driver - a new one, an older one, perhaps a Vista driver. (Make sure that all of the drivers you try are for 64-bit Windows, not 32-bit Windows.)

    2. Try installing a different NIC -- an internal NIC card would be the best, because it is internal and out of the way. Once you do this, and get online with the new NIC, do a Windows update, to see if Windows finds a driver for the problematic NIC. If it does, then install only that one update (only the driver for the problematic NIC). That may fix the problematic NIC. If this fixes the problematic NIC, then you are good to go. Remove the new NIC.

    3. If that didn't fix the problematic NIC, then just go with the new NIC you have installed.

OooooKaaaay, let me try to respond to this.
First, so 150 reads but no one has any knowledge about the kb's. Hmmm, interesting. Again the hardware works fine.
Second, yeah I'll give drivers a go. I was under the impression SP1 causes the problem regardless of which driver. I can easily pop in a nic I have. Guess I thought Update wouldn't be looking for a driver for the onboard if I'm using another nic.

I'll test this and monitor if Windows drops the connection, as before. Going to Windows 10 but this HDD w/7 has all my programming appls on it.

    Thank you Mrjim,

Windows Update looks for drivers for all devices that Windows can see. So if you have two NICs and one of them has an incorrect or bad driver, Windows Update will offer you another driver for that NIC. I have used this method many times to revive an onboard NIC that I couldn't find the driver for, and it has worked every time.

If you move to Windows 10, Windows 10 may have the driver that you need already included with 10.

Of course, your internal NIC could be bad, in which case a new driver won't fix it. But because you have an available NIC that you can install, you can use that NIC rather than the internal one if the internal one is defective. In other words, you're good to go in any case.
