    Non-Genuine Win7 Notice

Hi...a couple of months ago my wife's computer crashed. The Win7 O/S on this computer had to be reinstalled. It never dawned on me that this would trigger a reverification of Product Key. She started getting the lower right hand corner of the screen message that this is not a genuine copy. I thought 'no problem' and started stepping thru the prompts. When I enter the Product Key it wasn't acceptable. I tried it again with same results. I've tried to make phone contact but (see snippet) there isn't phone support. Now to make the problem more complex I'm U.S. living in Honduras and everything is done by cell phone and cell signals from towers can be a problem...and it is for me since I live in a mountainous area. That means to make a call I have to leave my house (where my computer is located) and drive 5km to where I can get signal...only to learn the number my tech friend gave me will not work either. I can't access Windows to start thru the Activation process all over again. What can I do?

I'm concerned about the time limit M/S gives to resolve this issue. Thanks for your help!

You have not supplied much info on your wife's computer, is it a laptop or desktop, what make is it & did it come with Windows installed?.

When you reinstalled Windows what version did you use & did it have an Activation Code?. How many times has this version of Windows been used before & is it only installed on this computer.

The reason for non activation is often caused by using another OEM version of Windows. For example, a Dell OEM version, will not activate on an HP OEM.

Sorry...it is a desktop. It was ordered online, same time as was mine. The Win7 DVD's (OEM) Home Premium x64 SP1 came separately. When they arrived, in order not to screw up the installation, we took everything to a local computer shop in San Pedro Sula (Honduras). I have to tell you they installed everything but when my wife's package came back with her computer, the sticky tab portion with the digital numbers had been stripped and there was black ink where it had partially been removed. I created a big stink. They insisted that the dvd package had come to them (from me) that way which was a crock. Both her packet and mine were identical and mine was untampered. We were given assurances that all was (and would be) well. And we've had no problem on her computer until the crash in April. The O/S had to be restored but I don't recall the verification process being required at the time.

This set of numbers (Product I.D) to my knowledge has never been used on any other computer. I say to my knowledge because no one can really say what the actual technician did. Here we've learned that those keys are valuable separate items to those who get their hands on a new computer. At the time of the squabble, I did check Magical Jelly Bean and did a snippet of the results. The Product I.D. was what was on my disk. Yesterday I did another Magical Jelly Bean check and it still shows Ann as the owner.

Now the problem is how do I get hold of M/S to get her numbers to them so they can verify it all? Our computers are well over a year old and never before had this problem. So it could be that the crash/reinstall of Win7 could have triggered all of this. I'm no computer expert and just guessing. So other than the original install by the Reseller in the States, it has been reinstalled once.

She has a CD Key as well as the Product I.D.

    Hi Doc,

the key currently on the system, 8892687 00010, is for an OEM FACTORY BUILT machine
HP - Hewlett Packard in your case
    CERTAINLY NOT a Retail licence

    if you run this tool
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=52012
(copy/paste/view the output to your desktop)
    you will/should also see this
    xxxxx-xxxxx-73CQT-WMF7J-3Q6C9

Is this the code on the CD - I DO HOPE NOT
AND what is the description on it .

My Lord...Roy it is. I've taken a snippet of it. Would it be safe to send it to you in this thread? Now please tell me what options (if any) that remain for us? I'm sick at my stomach now.

The portion of the sticker on the blue M/S folder containing the dvd that was stripped and inked (painted) over is the lower left corner under a bar code. Can't read anything thru the inked out part but on the far right in mini-mouse print under magnification I can read "THIS IS NOT A COA". This print is above and below another bar code with numbers 00174-046-870-245. Don't know if this will be of any help.

    Hi Doc,

thats a bummer, and why i asked about the full description on the CD packaging
    if it states
W7 Home premium - RETAIL or System Builder, then i would look very closely at the printing of the key, it could NEVER have been the original!!!.
Only unique keys are on CD's
Those keys are all over the web, so no need to post it, and are frequently used by counterfieters to dupe people, and used with an exploit to circumvent the Genuine checks.
and as you have found are broken when a clean install is performed
Suspect thats what your local shop did and sold on the true key
Dont suppose you have a back-up copy of her machine before the crash, Macrium etc, i can check

You could report the shop to MS, they might be generous and offer you a new key, more likely for W10
    How to Tell – FAQ

    then the report piracy section.

The only other option time to buy a new licence, aaaargh

    note
run that tool on your comp as well, compare the key to the one on the cd

A couple of remaining questions...when the authentic windows diagnostic tool was run and it picked up both my Product I.D. and the CDKey...where did it retrieve those? From their private storage records? Or from off my machine?...like Magical Jelly Bean? If they're just running off her computer and obtaining the same numbers I've had stored and they compare, what have I learned? It seems if the numbers on her machine matchup with those in M/S records then why would the Product I.D. fail when I try to reactivate? I'm really confused about this.

By the way, my efforts at reaching Microsoft about any of this was just wasted time. I could never resolve a single question/problem with them. Can't resolve anything if you can't communicate! I think Win7 is a wasting piece of inventory to them and it wouldn't hurt their feelings at all to turn people like us into their Win10 clientele. That's what they've been after for some time now. Do you know that a RETAIL Win7 box can be purchased for $333.00? And Win7 can't be good for much more than the end of 2018, I think.

Anyway I look forward to your response to the real issue above. And I very much appreciate your effort to help us!!!
    Thanks!

Programs like Magic Jelly Bean & similar pick up the key from the installed version of Windows & report it. However, this activation code might well be a pirated one or one that has been used many times elsewhere. If this key does not match the OEM code in the computer BIOS then it will fail activation. Of course it then has to pass the Microsoft activation check where it might fail if is suspect.

Just as a matter of interest, has you other HP Windows DVD that you got when you bought the computers been used. I am just curious as to why the computer shop would use a pirated activation code on one computer & not the other. Hopefully they have not put pirated copies on both computers. I suppose this will completely ruin your day & I do apologise for suggesting it, but it's a possible a reality that you may need to be prepared for.
