Probably a good plan. I know how we get used to a particular product or way of working, even when a clean slate would be best.
There is an free open source bitmap editor called Gimp, that has many of the features of your Photoshop, and a lot more, and is well worth a look.
For your day to day cropping and such, I would actually recommend another free open source option Irfanview which can be added to with plugins, also free, and set to call Gimp if you ever need to pixel edit an image. Irfanview is a file manager for images that opens a folder of images in thumbnail view one at a time and you can scroll through, and allows you to perform crops and other functions and can do this in a batch it includes a companion app to display the whole contents of a folder in thumbnail form, but this is less useful now that this is included in windows
