Activation error on old Dell using retail license

    Hi,
I upgraded my mom's old Dell from Vista to 7 using (unfortunately) software and key purchased on eBay. (I know, I know. My bad. I'm disabled and poor.)

Activation failed after 30 days. Help much appreciated!

    Here is the diagnostic report.

Is there a Windows install key sticker on the computer? if so, which Windows version is it for? If it is for Windows 7, then you can use that key to activate Windows 7. However, if it is for Vista, you are out of luck.

There is an option for you if you want to have Windows 7, or actually something exactly like it: You can still purchase a full retail copy of Windows 8.1 Pro. You can install Windows 8.1, then install Classic Shell in Windows 8.1. Classic Shell will allow you to configure Windows 8.1 to look and feel EXACTLY like Windows 7. Also, you will receive security patches from Microsoft till January of 2023 with Windows 8.1 (as opposed to January of 2020 with Windows 7).

Here is the download link for Windows 8.1:
    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...82E16832397788

Newegg is a legitimate business, so I have full confidence in the legitimacy of the Windows 8.1 license you will be purchasing from Newegg.

    mrjimphelps,

$129.99 is probably more than the machine cost. Computer shops in the UK have win7 HomePremium system builder for about $50-$60. Win 10 Home system builder is about the same cost.

Alternatively, a free Linux distro such as Linux Mint Cinnamon
Editions for Linux Mint 19 "Tara" - Linux Mint

I'd also report the individual that sold you the bogus key on eBay! You might get lucky and receive a rebate from eBay and hopefully, at a minimum, they will terminate that invidual's account.
    SIW2's suggestions
I have dual boot laptop with Celeron processor. I have Linux Lite 2.002 beta on it with windows. LL runs sweet!

I agree with what you said. In fact, I just installed Linux Mint 19 on my laptop. Comes with Libre Office 6 and the latest Firefox straight out of the box. This is my preferred option. I could have installed Windows 7, because my laptop has a Windows 7 OEM install key, but I preferred to go with Mint.

However, if the user wants to get a full retail copy of Windows 8.1 in order to get security patches till January 2023, then Windows 8.1 is a good option. Because it is retail and not OEM, he will be able to transfer it to another computer should he decide to do that. To me, these will be the deciding factors for choosing Windows 8.1.

I've never heard of getting Windows 7 Home Premium system builder for $50 to $60. Are you speaking of just Windows, or of a computer with Windows installed on it?

The system builder installation dvds are available from various computer outlets at that sort of price in the UK.

It is also possible to get oem licenses from other machines in Europe and elsewhere.

The problem with buying a key off ebay or similar is that you can't be sure it is ok.

You might get one from somebody whose laptop is broken, and the key is no longer in use.

Or you might be unlucky and buy from someone unscrupulous, who sells the same key multiple times and it is in use on other machine(s).

If you only purchased one license, the the right of distribution of that one license passes to you.
The right of reproduction does not pass to you. Therefore you can only sell that one license. You can't sell the same one to multiple people. It is irrelevant how that license was marketed. Oem, system builder, came preinstalled etc. Makes no difference.
