Confused when an update is unchecked

    Here is the latest example:
    KB4054530
    I have W7.
This is a .net framework update. They always seem to be a pain anyway.
This is supposed to be an important update, but it arrives unchecked.
    What do I do?

IMO if it's Unchecked don't install it. If a piece of software needs a newer version of .NET Framework it will ask you to install it. Right now I only have 4.6.1 on my machine running very well with a moderate amount of software installed. KB4054530 is listed as Optional on my machine, and I don't install Optional unless I know they are needed. In the end I would not install anything .NET Related that I don't need.

I am also of the opinion that you do not need to install .NET Frameworks, unless you intend software that is capable of running it.

    Thanks

I have has enough aggravation with MS updates over the years.
    This one, I'll forego.

But, I still don't know why MS sends me "important" updates that are unchecked.

I don't know for sure but that's probably done if that version isn't installed. It's important only if you already 4 installed but not if it isn't already installed. Personally I don't install it unless I need it.If you install any programs that need it either the program will download and install it or tell you that it is needed.

    why

If it's not installed, why send me the update at all? Most of us are not experts. This just causes confusion.

Microsoft think it's "important" that bods have the latest versions. That is their mentality. But unless you are running software that is dependent on later versions of .NET (or if MS stop issuing security dates for older versions) you do not need to install them. In straightforward terms .NET provides software functions for applications to use (rather than developers writing their own, and so makes development a lot quicker and standardised). If you install something that needs a later version of .NET , the software install should tell you.

I have .NET 3.5.1 (as that is what Win7 SP1 came with). In respect of .NET I only install updates that cover 3.5.1. I hide all other .NET updates (by right click on the item in "Select Updates To Install"). Never had anything demand a later version.

And I agree, that Important doesn't seem to be the right label - Recommended would be more appropriate.

Well, I just checked and I have net framework 4.7.1
    This update is 4.7.2
I see no reason to update. The only s-ware I have that uses net framework is Turbo Tax, and it worked just fine a few months ago.

If you have windows update set for Windows and other products it will offer you .net because they think that you should have it. The also offer other applications like silverlight. Just because they offer it doesn't mean that you need it. If you want to do away with that open up windows update, select settings, and uncheck to receive software from other products.
