    Permission denied and other problems after installing KB4457144


    I installed KB4457144, KB4457918, and KB890830 and after rebooting had the following problems:


    - A shortcut to a batch file was no longer in the startup folder.
    - boot.bat, the batch file run by the shortcut was missing
    - auto.bat, a batch file invoked by "start cmd.exe /k" in boot.bat was missing
    - trying to copy those files back resulted in a permission denied error.


    I backed off KB4457144. The permission denied error disappeared. I was able to restore the missing items and reboot as usual. It looks like the update is trying to erase all unknown batch files invoked at startup via "start cmd.exe".


    I received no notifications of these actions nor could I find any relevant messages in the event viewer.

    Gotta love Microsoft! Have you heard of DISM++?

    It's a 3rd party Windows Update tool. It's much faster than WU, doesn't require rebooting between updates, doesn't install updates that have been superseded, and provides popup messages for any KB that has known issues.

    You can click on either executable .exe and it will only run the one applicable to your computer. Choose Updates, Scan, wait a few minutes, then select the updates, you'll then see if any have issues and you can decide to install or cancel that KB.
