    Unauthorized copy of windows 7

I bought this computer 2 years ago and never had a problem. All of a sudden this week it starting telling me that I am running an unauthorized copy of Windows 7. I was told that I need to do a clean install but I will lose a lot of information and applications I have. I only have one hard drive and don't have enough room to do a complete backup. Actually the only thing I cannot do now is run updates which to me is no big deal. Everything else runs fine. I might buy an external hard drive to do a complete backup and do a new install of Windows 7 so I guess I'll keep using it the way it is for now. If anyone has a suggestion other than a clean install and make my copy authorized please let me know. I have a Dell Optiplex 760.

Do you have a COA sticker on the machine?

    Did windows 7 come preinstalled?

Does the machine have a slic table in bios?
    You can check using this
    Described in para 3 here

    Hi Ron,

Interesting the key showing is the default for Home premium, will never activate.
I would like you to check the service tag on the Dell website, it should tell you which OS was shipped
Doesnt tell me why its gone non-genuine, allthough your system appeares to not be Registered but activated, usuall fix install KB971033, dont worry if it comes back allready installed it will update

I can tell you your copy of Office Enterprise is NON-Genuine, goes to a blocked server

Reboot the comp repost a new Mgdiag, and what Dell's service tag info is.

bought this from a private party, not retail. Thought the copy of the OS was valid. I purchased a genuine copy of windows 7 but do not want to do a clean install until i can back up drive

    Hi Ron,

running that KB could bring it back to being genuine.

    If that doesn't work,
You can input your purchased key via

Control panel >> system >> click on -- change product key

    Roy

    NO repair/re-install will be required

I had something similar recently - bought a netbook off ebay with Windows 7 on. Seemed fine and was activated. I decided to do a clean install so needed the product key - installed speccy to get the product key, did the clean install and the product key wasn't accepted. Googled the product key number and found it was a generic key for Dell. Laptop wasn't a dell! Was about to send it back when I found the original Windows 7 starter product code in the battery bay So that saved the day.

Anyway looks like you've had it all checked out but if you install Speccy and get the product key - trying googling the key number!
