Windows Update keeps resetting itself to automatic

I have a 2015 Dell Inspiron Win 7 machine. I set updates to allow me to choose when to download and install updates, but my machine always downloads any updates without asking me and says updates will install in 10 minutes unless I postpone (which I can do up to 4 hours at a time. There is no option to not install the updates). If I'm away from the computer it just goes ahead and installs them, no permission required. Sure enough, when I check the control panel, Windows Update has reset itself to download and install updates automatically, in spite of the fact that I have already set it not to do so.

Any ideas? All I can find are instructions on how to set the preferences; nothing on what to do if Windows ignores the preferences you set, and returns itself to default settings.

    Thanks.

What I would do is to set WU [Windows Update] to Never check for updates (not recommended). Then you can run WU when it is comvienient to you and you will not get the messages!

    I hope this helps!

    I'll try that.

Hopefully this setting will not be ignored like my previous setting is.

    Thanks.

You didn't tell us what version of Win-7 you have. I have "Ultimate", and I likewise set for manual updates. The only thing I get is a "nag flag" suggesting a reset of updates, which I ignore. Maybe it's different for other versions?

Microsoft is notorious for believing they know what's best for you better than you know for yourself.

The OP is using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
