After having to restore to an earlier date several times after installing MS updates this year essentially broke my computers, I got fed up and won't install any updates past December, 2017.
That is very wise. I know a lot of people that use the December 2017 cut off for updates and hardly have any problems. I know a couple of people who actually use May 2017 as their cut off. I personally only install the Monthly Security-Only-Updates. I do keep an eye on the Critical, Important System Updates and .NET Framework updates however, just in case!

I was doing the Security Only updates. Seems like MS stuck their heads where the sun don't shine for all their OS updates at the first of the year. Even their fair haired OS (Win 10) has been plagued with bad updates.

I remain confused as to whether or not a regular user needs NET Framework. What does it actually do other than take a long time to d/l and use up space? Can't get a straight answer on this, seems like NET Framework is geared to developers and programmers.

FWIW I never install the optionals and the Malicious software tool. I always check this site before updating.

Some programs are built off NET Framework. I have at least one program that depends on Net Framework (although, for the life of me, I can't remember which one it is).

[3] It downloads the latest WU DB from the M$ servers, scans your OS, and then lists the updates available.
Paul, do you mean It Checks the latest WU DB from the M$, Then scans your OS. Instead of "It downloads"?

Yes, it scans for the updates available and gives you the option of what you want to install. Please see my post #10 above.

    I hope this helps!

I meant to say you may want to change that if that is indeed correct. Either Downloads, or Checks. I assume it Checks first, and then let's you decide to download and install. Good tutorial, can't wait to use it!

This might be of use => What Is the .NET Framework, and Why Do I Need It?.
