Stop updates of Windows 7 malicious software removal tool

Is there a way of doing this? Updates of this item always fail, and I have found no viable solution. As I run a proprietary antivirus package I do not need the MSRT. Can it be uninstalled? If so, how? If not, is there a way of telling Windows 7 not to bother updating the MSRT? How might I find the MSRT in Windows Explorer so as to remove it? I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.

    Hi jsampson45,

You will have to change your Updates settings to Let Me Choose.
    Windows Update Settings - Change

It then gives you the option to Hide any update.
(right click on the KB > select hide from the dropdown window)

MSRT is a one-time update and does NOT appear in either history or installed updates

Many thanks. Will this prevent me being notified about future MSRT updates?

In theory, yes. In practice, you might or might not. I keep getting Office updates although I don't have Office and keep hiding them.

    Hi

    NO

you now have to open WU and check whats available, and either choose to install or hide the updates offered.

Getting rid of windows defender might do it. It doesn't aversely affect users of MSE.

MSRT is not an installed program on the computer so you cannot remove or uninstall it. It is a software item that gets downloaded during certain updates & it runs automatically once to protect your computer from these threats. Running it will not cause any problems & it will provide possibly even better protection for you.

But MSRT update always fails. I don't really want to mark this thread as solved, but I want to thank the people who have made suggestions. I think MSRT "update available" reminders are like the common cold - inevitable.
