Question about the OPTIONAL updates shown for January 2019

    Good morning everyone,

In the screenshot below, are 3 OPTIONAL updates being shown in this month's updates.

I don't recall ever getting an MSE or .NET update shown as "Optional" before. They have typically been listed as "Important".

My question: Would it be advisable to install the 2nd & 3rd updates, for MSE and the .NET Framework, or just hide them?

Thanks very much for any info!

If an update is not marked "Critical" or "Important", then I think the only choice would be "Optional".

Microsoft Security Essentials Definition Updates should definitely be installed.

I have my MSE set to check definition updates very morning & they are actually shown as important. Windows Updates will usually install them automatically & they do show up as installed updates in View Update History.

Much obliged for your respective replies, skuddle & Ranger4!

(For Ranger4): I also have my MSE set to auto-update as well, which it usually does. I don't recall ever seeing one show up like this - i.e., with the regular Patch Tuesday updates though.

    Cheers!

Sometimes MSE will update the normal way & then an hour or so later you might get the Monthly Roll Up for example & there is a new Definition Update available as well so it will get downloaded with the Roll Up & then ask if you want to install it.This is also what happened to me with the Jan Roll Up, but I have seen it before.

It depends on when the MSE Definition Updates are ready in relation to other Updates.
