Windows 7 sp1 Activation Bug

Microsoft's killer Windows 7 patch: Breaks networking, flags legit PCs as 'Not genuine' | ZDNet

This may have been the cause KB971033/KB4480960/KB4480970

Are they any others that shouldn't be installed?

Have they fixed it?

Out of curiosity does this bug also effect Windows 10. I wasn't really clear on that.

I have the same problem. For some reason Win7 SP1 is now claiming my OEM install is not legitimate even tho I've been using it for 2 years. None of the three KBs (KB971033/KB4480960/KB4480970) are installed. Yeah, I'm paranoid. Is this another crappy, hamfisted attempt by Microsoft to force me to upgrade to Windows Me v.10?

Don’t think it has anything to do with SP1, as you can see I run Win 7 Home Premium with SP1 installed and mine updated without a problem.

Even though this link applies to Windows 7 Professional & Windows 7 Enterprise, you might try removing KB971033 (if you have it) as covered under "Resolution" section in link.

Access Denied

Edit: If you don't have KB971033, see second note at bottom of page that talks about "rebuild activation-related files and reactivate the system"

Hi @LilBro,

Interesting as you have a custom build, according to your specs.
KB971033 should NOT BE ON KMS business/college computers
(KMS product keys are activated against the companies/colleges servers)
It is part of the validation process, however i can see why MS might have inadvertantly caused this, if thier trying to flush out non-genuine installs that Self-Validate within thier own computer.

You should have either a System builder or Retail key on yours
easy enough to check run this tool from here, copy/paste the output

torchwood,

That doesn't make any sense. If I am understanding the articles I read about it. The activation issue didn't show up until after the current updates for Jan 2019. Even Brink news article now points to that article. Microsoft is supposedly working on a patch for this issue. That why I haven't updated windows 7 sp1 yet. It is effecting more than just corporate & pro users. I even read it is effecting home computer that are pre-activated and others that are not. It is not limited to just volume users. Retail, pro, oem, upgraded, etc.

This may also be effecting people who upgraded to windows 10 as well. Even though it had another another activation error, that may or may have not been patched. I really couldn't find an answer on that.

I think it was solved but I am not sure. I don't have the activation bug that was recently reported in Jan 2019. I did all the updates. However, I didn't install the preview updates.

Is anyone still experiencing this issue as well?

We still have multiple Windows 7 computers that are supposedly not genuine. After uninstalling KB971033 and running Microsoft's script (Access Denied), the computers are reactivated succesfully.

But the next day Windows 7 is back to being not activated. It drives me nuts.

Thank you for your suggestion but unfortunately that doesn't seem to fix the problem for us. Last Thursday, I installed the update KB4487345, rebooted the computer and ran the activation script again but today the problem returned on that user's computer.
