One suggestion is to download the .msu file and try installing it manually from here [Direct Download] => Download KB4486563 MSU for Windows 7 64-bit (x64) - 240.6 MB.

I hope this helps!

Paul:

Nope, that didn't work either.

So far that's the only update that refuses to install. I think I'm pretty much up to date except for that one.

I'll double check.

Hey Guys:

Something I just thought of, I downloaded and ran a program called PatchCleaner a while back in an attempt to free up some disk space on my old drive. It claimed to remove a bunch of unused Windows Installer packages that were "no longer needed". Could this have caused all the missing update files?

Quite possibly, although resetting the Windows Update Agent should have really corrected this!

I suggest that you uninstall the program.

Download and run Revo Uninstaller [FREE] from here => Revo Uninstaller. When you run scan for leftover items make sure that you use the Advanced Scan option, then tick everything and delete it.

Then run WU's.

I hope this helps!

[QUOTE=1metalguru;3418709]Hi Guys:

I downloaded the SURT as per the posting instructions, but it refuses to install. Just sits there for hours with "Initializing Installation" message.

I ran SFC Scan, it shows no errors.

CBS.zip file - It's 50megs, it won't let me upload it.... Says max 8.95 Mb - What do I do?

Hi Darrell,

Run SURT again and be patient, it may take a while to complete. CheckSUR.log is temporary in its original location. Post CheckSUR.log, CBS.log and most recent CBS.persist.log. Place all of them in a zip folder and upload them.

Paul:

I'll try this, although Patch Cleaner is not a resident program, you just run it once and it supposedly cleans up and exits. So, it's not currently running in real time. But, I'll get rid of it and try WU again.

I did download and install SFCFix, it found the missing files but did not fix anything.

Can't upload the CBSPersistlog files. Its 50Meg, it gets to 95+% and then fails with either "can't connect to server" or some other page not available error. I'll try to add it to another post

Attached Files
File Type: log CBS.log (749.0 KB, 1 views)
File Type: log CheckSUR.log (100.0 KB, 2 views)
File Type: log CheckSUR.persist.log (100.0 KB, 0 views)
File Type: txt SFCFix.txt (1.7 KB, 2 views)

Try to upload CBSPersist file. Won't upload. Gets to 99% and 404 error pops up in uploader window.

It's over 50MB compressed, 781 MB uncompressed.

Hi 1metalguru,

I think the best thing you can do considering the amount of corrupted files that you have and the continued problems that you are having is to do the following.

Repair Install - Overview

A repair install differs from a clean install in the fact that it ONLY replaces the corrupted OS with a new fresh copy. This means that ALL your User Accounts, Folders, Files, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Data Files, Icons, and any installed programs are left intact. It does however, delete ALL the Window updates, and can affect, sounds, services, visual effect settings and device drivers by re-setting them to default. You cannot do a repair install at boot, in Safe Mode, using a system repair disk, or using an integrated Windows update disk. Basically, this process can ONLY be performed from within the LIVE OS.

Once that has been done then you could update the OS very quickly using DISM++.

DISM++ - Basic Overview

DISM++ is a FREE implementation tool that has the ability to perform Windows Updates [WU]. Some of the advantages [but not all] are:

[1] The GUI is very easy to understand and use.
[2] It is much faster than M$’s WU because it uses a different engine.
[3] It downloads the latest WU DB from the M$ servers, scans your OS, and then lists the updates available.
[4] It doesn’t install superseded updates like M$ does.
[5] It gives you the option of what you want to install.
[6] The pre-ticked updates are what is recommended and are similar to the WU critical and recommended updates. The un-ticked updates are similar to the WU optional updates.

[7] It warns you if an update:
  • Includes telemetry.
  • Has known issues with certain hardware.
  • Needs exclusive access.
  • Is suspect.
  • Your OS doesn't need it.
  • Has any other known issues.
[8] It doesn’t require re-booting between updates.[9] It can be used to either update an install.wim image OFFLINE, or to update the LIVE OS.
I hope this helps!

Paul:

So a repair install will destroy all of my custom settings, remove all the drivers I have installed, and set me back god knows how far in updates?

I don't think that is a viable option. As I said, the ONLY thing this affects right now is the occasional update, I have NO other issues with Windows at all at this point. I just don't see how its worth it to go through all that work just to fix this issue. I don't have a week to figure out how to recover from this.

You are absolutely certain there is no other way?
