So a repair install will destroy all of my custom settings, remove all the drivers you have installed, and set you back god knows how far in updates?

I don't think that is a viable option. As I said, the ONLY thing this affects right now is the occasional update, I have NO other issues with Windows at all at this point. I just don't see how its worth it to go through all that work just to fix this issue. I don't have a week to figure out how to recover from this.

You are absolutely certain there is no other way?

No, a repair install will not destroy all of your custom settings, remove all the drives I have installed, and set me back god knows how far in updates?

Did you open, read my attachment & watch the video by Brian at Britec Computers UK in post #31?

Do you have another drive you can back your system up on? You should always! I don't recommend using Microsoft for this. I recommend either AOMEI Backupper Standard free or Macrium Reflect free. I use AOMEI and it is a little more new user friendly.

I could locate all the missing cat/mum files and upload them for you, however, it will take me a while & although I haven't meticulously perused your CBS.log, I believe there is at least another issue.

    You've ALMOST got me convinced.

Instead of telling me what Won't be affected, how about a list of things that will be affected? The updates shouldn't be too bad, (all 230 of em), using DISM, I've already used DISM to install some updates, but what sort of other things will I have to repair? reinstall?

As I said, I don't want to have a bunch of surprises with this. It looks deceptively easy, but there are always a thousand things that people don't seem to mention. It would definitely be nice to have a fresh install of windows after running this one for 6 or 7 years. Windows tends to get a bit ragged after that amount of time.

I have a program that generates an image of the whole drive, I just used it to swap out an old 64GB SSD for a new 500GB model, and it worked flawlessly, so I'm not worried about backups. I have a networked NAS drive running OMV to back up to as well.

And, yes, of course I read your attachment, and a dozen other pages on a rescue install, and I saw the Britec video yesterday.

Thanks for all your help, and Paul as well. I'm just queasy about doing this.

Repair Install replaces your operating system, Windows 7 64 bit home premium SP1
If your backup program works flawlessly as you say, make a full backup, check integrity of backup & your pretty safe to give it a go. I've done too many Repair Installs to give you a number but basically a piece of cake. Make sure you have your 25 character windows 7 activation key and during the Repair Install process, click Upgrade. It doesn't actually upgrade it just replaces your OS.
