Unable to install KB4474419 on Win7 x64 Ultimate

The March updates are giving me a headache I've never experienced before, this update, goes up to 30% on reboot, like all of them, then at reboot, it gets to 97% and then I get "Failure to apply Windows Update (or something like that) Reverting changes ..." (not the exact wording, but I'm sure you guys know what I'm speaking of. Then after a while it reboots, I get the same message and then I get the login screen.

Of course Win Update tells me I have to do it again...I downloaded the .msu direct install file and that allowed me to install another update, it was having trouble applying 2 updates at first... see screengrab...the other one installed fine but this one keeps not wanting to behave...I hear it is pretty important of an update too, SHA-2 encoding being needed for updates past July of this year.

I never encountered such a situation, so I cleaned up the system and I can only find people having trouble with this KB for Win10 when I search around on various search engines. I need help from those keeping faithful to 7 x64 Ultimate!

Have you found a solution? As for myself, strangely, I caught some malware between my many trials at updating that thing, I needed several programs to get rid of it all, malwarebytes, Zemana Antimalware, Malwarebytes AdsAware..., I noticed it when it highjacked firefox's homepage.

Had some quite strange stuff going on without me noticing, I'll stop trusting MSE entirely and re-install ESET NOD32. Now that all the malware is gone, I'll be trying to install it again...Keeping you posted.

Alright, will do. I'll try the Windows Update Troubleshooter first, I didn't apply changes yet, but it does see 3 things that would need repair, as of now.

Yeah, MSE is alright to detect while doing a manual scan, not so much at preventing surrependitious malware, I got no idea how it managed to show up when I was doing nothing but browse around for help regarding this in between reboots. If the WUT doesn't help I'll go ahead and get the logs.

Good luck with troubleshooter, however, it usually doesn't work.

I had the same issue, and I found that the solution for me was the same as mentioned in this Microsoft Community thread. I dual-boot Windows 7 and Linux, and I had to boot directly into Windows when restarting to install KB4474419, instead of going through GRUB.

If you're dual-booting as well, you might want to give that a shot.

I got no idea how to do that...yep, I dual boot Mint and Win7...I unplug all usb external drives, that's the first thing mentioned over on MS' website...the direct boot part I don't know how to pull and bypass Grub, I don't think switching internal drives boot order would help, as grub is installed on all of them (internals).

Best practice to dual boot Windows 7/Linux is to place the Grub Bootloader on the same partition as your Linux distro.

Use Microsoft Boot Manager to initiate dual boot with Linux boot option to Grub.

Do you know how to accomplish the change?

I'd need to find this MS Boot Manager to be able to direct boot or I could boot into Mint 18.3 and run Boot-Repair, that way you can tell the linux program to remove grub from all drives except the one where Linux is located. I'd likely be able to figure out this MS Boot Manager easily, I just never heard of it, you have to boot from it on a dvd/cd or a usb drive I imagine? I'd take the instructions in any case.

    Thanks a lot.
