    Windows Update Error 0000FFFF

Did a fresh install back in December. Since then, various Windows Update will not install resulting in the error message in thread title:

    • No BSODs are associated with this Problem
    • Have run Windows Update Fox-It Tool and WindowsUpdateDiagCab
    • AV is Kaspesky Total Security, have also tried Updates with AV disabled
    • Policy is to wait a week after receiving updates and manually install using WU if they show no issues
    • Preview Updates are not installed
    • Updates associated with Telemetering are not installed
    • Hardware driver updates done only from manufacturer's web site
    • Windows is activated

The following Important Updates will not install:

    - KB4489878 - 2019-03Windows Monthly Rollup
    - KB915597 - Definition Update for Windows Defender

The following Optional Updates are not installed (and reason why not):

KB4487256 - 2019-02 Preview Rollup for NE Framework (Preview)
KB4489892 - 2019-03 Preview Rollup for Windows (Preview)
KB3021917 - Compatibility Update to determine suitability for for Win 10 Downgrade

    KB3080149 - Telemetry tracking service

KB3161102 - Removes Windows Journal (New, just haven't done yet)
KB3184143 - Removed get Win10 app (thought I did this already, will try again)
Intel NET - Hardware Update (More Information link, nonfunctional, have not determined what it is)
Intel 4600 Update - As above
Realtek 6.0.1.7982 - Not on Asus website

Spent about 3 months checking, searching forums to no avail. Any ideas, suggestions greatly appreciated.

PS: Any idea why forum software keeps adding returns to my post so that after posting have to go in and edit to remove the returns so that folks don't wear out their scroll buttons ?

    Yep!
    In FireFox URL type: about:config
Yes, of course you’ll be careful!
    Copy and paste
    editor.use_div_for_default_newlines
    into searchbox
double-left-click entry to toggle to false

Regarding your WU error we need to see some logs.
Please run SURT64 when it completes, navigate to: C:\Windows\Logs zip/compress the CBS folder and upload it please.

    Few issues with KB4489878

Here's the thing .... I did a fresh install in December because of this problem ... Not just once, I did it 4 times with the same result. When finished, I had the same problem... those updates would not install. After losing 4 days with 4 fresh installs with DISM++, I had to play catch up and did the fresh install the 5th time w/o using DISM++. Same result. Got caught up on my work backlog and been too busy to address ... finally had a break and started this thread.

I never even got to the point where I installed a single program.

    1. Made Rufus boot on thumb drive
    2. Installed Windows (fresh install after formatting) ... ethernet cable not connected
    3. Installed Drivers from original component DVDs
    4. Ran DISM++ installing all but the orange updates
    5. The two problem updates did not install. Installed updated hardware drivers; still would not install.drivers

    6. Repeated steps 1 thru 4
    7. Repeated steps 1 thru 4 out of original order ... 1, 2, 4, 3
    8. Repeated step 7
    9. Did steps 1 2 and 3 ... ran windows update 23 times

    Noticed this from 04/02/19
Windows update could not be installed because of error 2359302 "" (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "D:\Temp\Windows6.1-KB971033-x64.MSU"

    Hi

    interesting

KB971033 falls OUTSIDE of the normal updates rules, and can be run multiple times, even when currently installed.

AND VERY VERY RARELY FAILS to install
(also no need to run via the D drive.)

Regarding the failures installing the Windows Defender Update thru Windows update, and after trying all the above plus a few other solutions, I opened WD and it said definitions were old, do i want to update ? So I did. After reboot, manually checked for updates and found KB4490628. Rebooted and checked again and the WD update (KB915597 was listed again ... this time it installed. Rebooted and checked again to find KB3942058 ... after that, no more Windows Updates.

    @JackNaylorPE,
Amazing how windows updates rely on prior updates or a particular order & the results when it doesn't go right, isn't it!
