Actually SURT isn't bad at all!

    Summary:
    Seconds executed: 3776
    Found 3 errors
CBS MUM Missing Total count: 3

    Localizing the missing cat/mum pairs!
That's good at least, I was a little worried once I saw it actually took longer than I originally thought.

Did the logs produce any reasons why the programs/updates are failing to install?

Please compress/zip CBS folder and upload. Location: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

Yea, that's an easy workaround issue however.

No. At this point I'd recommend a Repair Install.

Thank you very much for all of your help, I gave the document a read and I'll give it a shot. Is it safe to assume my OS is in pretty bad shape at the moment then?

Component Hive corruption! It's repairable, but don't have the know-how YET!
I'm not there yet in my Win Update training!
You'd be amazed at how complex Windows Update is!

Repair Install is simple. You do it from within windows, i.e. while your computer is running. Brian's video is excellent!
Make sure you have your 25-character key. I use magic jellybean to find it (see screenshot below). I usually download the Win7 ISO, & extract it with 7-zip to a folder on my desktop. I open the folder and run setup.exe. When you get to the screen that gives you two choices, you want Inplace Upgrade
