Several Windows Update Fails - KB4493132 and KB4512506 with 80092004

Hi Folks,

Windows 7 HP SP1 x64

Several problems with Windows Update. Mainly being stuck on Downloading 0%.

I have tried several solutions:

I have tried stopping all services bar Microsoft services and re-tried.

No joy

I have stopped Windows Firewall (actually it wasn't even turned on)

No joy

I have stopped the update service and deleted the update folder (C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution)
and re-started the service

No joy

I then ran an elevated Cmd prompt to rename the Software Distribution folder to .bak (succesful) and tried to rename catroot2 to catroot2.bak - but I got the "Access Denied" error.

I have tried the Windows Update Troubleshooter

https://aka.ms/diag_wu

But it couldn't resolve all errors.

It says "Service Registration is missing or corrupt" - Not Fixed

"Windows Update error 0x80070057(2019-08-19-T-11_00_02A) - Not Fixed

"Problems installing recent updates" - Fixed (there are 3 of these entries!)

I spoke to a Microsoft 'Chat Agent' and he suggested to run these from an elevated command prompt.

net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
net stop wuauserv
net stop msiserver
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
net start bits
net start cryptsvc
net start wuauserv
net start msiserver
SC config wuauserv start= auto
SC config bits start= auto
SC config cryptsvc start= auto
SC config trustedInstaller start= auto

He was confident these would fix the issue with Windows Update.

I have restarted the pc and run Windows Update again.

I have managed to download and install KB4507240 and KB4474419 but KB4493132 and KB4512506 have both failed with error code 80092004.

Tried KB4493132 again - just failed a second time with the same error - 80092004

Will try the M$ solution again but I gather that others are getting the 80092004 error with KB4493132.

Anyone been able to resolve these?

I still have KB4503548, KB890830 and KB 4512514 to try.

Zaph

Yep.

My MCSE is in Windows 2000 and apart from gaining the qualification, I have no practical experience of being a Systems Engineer. Ended up at a call centre fixing PCs over the phone back in the early 2000's before returning to teaching in a secondary school.

I've run sfc and chkdsk with no issues.

Not heard of SURT64 and won't run it unless I know where it is from. Google doesn't seem to know what it is either!

Of the remaining updates to apply - KB4503548, KB890830 and KB 4512514 - only KB4512514 failed.

That means there are three updates that fail (and 2 of those are giving other members problems) - namely, KB4493132, KB4512506 and KB4512514.

It is from Microsoft.

SURT

SURT [System Update Readiness Tool] is a self-installing utility that executes when you install it. It is used because of an inconsistency found in the Windows servicing store that may prevent the successful installation of updates, service packs, and software. It checks for these inconsistencies [integrity] and tries to fix any issues found. It supports all versions of Windows 7 SP1. When SURT is run, it will create two log files, CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log, both in the temporary folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\.

SURT 64-bit download => SURT for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014].

Install SURT [it will automatically run on installation and may take about 15 minutes or so to complete].

SUGGESTION: It is advisable to turn off the power options for sleep etc while this is running because it could take a while.

I hope this helps!

Further update:

Cancelled the installer as it wasn't doing anything (via 'Task Manager' as 'Cancel' didn't do anything). Re-ran setup again and got 'Installer encountered an error: 0x80240009'.

The thing is, it does take a while to run, and really doesn't actually show any signs of running at all as it appears to be stuck or frozen. How long did you let it run for before you stopped it?

Hi Paul,

Edited previous post to clarify but to answer your question directly, around 30+ mins.

Absolutely no indication it was doiung anything.

Now when I try running the setup again, it keeps spitting out the 0x80240009 error.

EDIT: Stopped and restarted the following services:

bits
cryptserv
wuauserv
msiserver

Ran the setup for SURT again ... let's see what happens this time.

Well that was quick. Now got the message:

"The following updates were not installed:

Hotfix for Windows (KB947821)"

Restart your computer (DUH) and try SURT64 again!

It is a windows update after all correct! (DUH AGAIN)

Did you check to see if the CheckSUR.log is generated? It is temporary in its original location:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\
CheckSUR.log
