    4. October update KB4524157 almost screwed up my computer

These monthly rollup updates have usually gone without problem but this time something very odd happened. I downloaded and installed the update. Restart took particularly long time and loading desktop failed. Error message said something about failing to connect to remote service (or something of the sort). I restarted. This time desktop loaded, but there was problem with sound device not working, taskbar skin (at the bottom) looking like it came from Windows 95 and error message saying problem with windows service. Also when I tried to shut down the system it would just hang at desktop.

I tried to do system restore to point before update. I don't know if it worked or not because I had to reset with computer's reset button after desktop hang. Now everything seems normal again with this one restart.

I'm just freaking out here. Microsoft has been known to push aggressively their latest version on us but would they go so far as to change these old systems for good? Should I gamble with these updates when I have perfectly good system I'm satisfied with?

Some error messages from Windows logs: (I'm translating)

Winlogon-notification subscriber <GPClient> was not available to handle critical notification event.
Winlogon-notification subscriber <Sens> failed at notification event.

I wanted to share and see if anyone else had problems with the update. It's very stressful situation when system fails at loading properly and I'm thinking "is this how my computer is going to be now". Do people here still want to update their systems? I've never seen any tangible benefit in doing that, yet there's a risk of catastrophe. Security can be improved in many ways, like removing unnecessary programs.

I had to translate error messages because this Windows version is localized, so US English version may or may not use same terms.

    Hi

    The golden rule here

Set windows Update to Never, if you REALLY need to install wait at least a week.

There have been a number of problems with out of band updates lately - this KB allegedly was a fix + others but its definately caused a fair bit of grief.

Thanks Roy, on point once again!

Most OPs have issues before the update that breaks it good.

I'm seeing the same issue here.... No prior issues with the machine as far as I'm aware.

"Windows Failed To Connect With System Event Notification Service"

Very long boot time and it then fails to then load personalisation settings leaving me with (as the OP said) a windows 95 looking task bar and pops up the failure notice.

Rollback to the backup before the update and the machine works fine again. Running Comodo firewall and anti virus.

Going to give this a couple of weeks to see if they fix it at MS. But if it's still doing it after that I'll drop back here and see if anybody can advise. Thanks.

Did you try to install the KB with Comodo and Anti-Virus.
    What are those exactly? Please.
    Comodo Firewall, and AV?
    What AV? Please.
    Could be your problem.
    Can't tell without logs.

    Hi Snick,

Yes... Comodo Firewall, and AV Installed as "Comodo Internet Security Premium". I haven't tried doing the install with that turned off. I might give that a go.

    The machine is X86 Win7 not X64 Win7.

The same KB installed fine onto my Win10 Laptop. That is also rumming "Comodo Internet Security Premium" So I'm doubting that that is the problem.

As for logs.... How long is a piece of string? is just as good a question as: how much does a house cost?

I haven't started fishing around the logs yet. Thought I'd see if anybody had a known issue quick fix off the shelf, before I started using time by digging any deeper.

    Best Regards,

Comodo is a dragon, the software somewhat so.

There is no QUICK FIX OFF THE SHELF. Windows Update is incredibly complex!!
That is why we ask you to run programs and provide logs. Have to look under the hood to see what the noise is!
