Windows Build 7601 copy not genuine?

So I got this message on my desktop after trying a clean install and having it working for about a month. It's genuine but it came installed on this HP desktop. The only thing I can think of that I did differently was to try to change a couple of Tasks in Task Scheduler to configure for Windows 7 as it was in Vista and the two tasks weren't working. It could be that or it could be I did the install wrong. There isn't a recovery partition on the SSD I upgraded to in preparation for the big turnoff on the 14th. Any help is appreciated. It says I'm a power user but I'm a lot more like a Luddite. Please be patient with me.

Where did you get the key from?

Is there a COA sticker on the machine somewhere?

I got the key from a line of code I found here on Windows 7 forums. I was told the one on the side of my computer isn't the one to use and the code was buried deep in the registry somewhere as a long line of 0s and 1s and the script could translate it for me. I also tried the Magic Jellybean trick and the two numbers were the same. Was that wrong? MS rejected the one I tried from the computer packaging but accepted the other... until now.

SLP keys will only work with matching xml file and bios marker. They cannot be used on their own. That is why a (different) key is provided on a COA sticker.

If you can't read the COA sticker, you could try running the third program here >>>7oeminstaller<<<

Oh, yes there is a sticker. The two number/letter combinations are completely different.

Thanks. I can read the sticker. I'm not sure what xml or bios markers are. Is there an easy way to activate?

I tried to activate windows by searching in the start menu. It didn't like the number I typed in. The sticker is legible.

I made the mistake of not skipping Step 2 "2. During Windows installation do not enter a product key and choose to skip it."

I tried the Raymondcc method (3 Tools to Backup and Restore Windows 7 and Vista OEM Activation License • Raymond.CC) and it seems to have worked. But the license appears to be different than both. But the program seems to recognize it as an HP machine and claims to have installed the license.

The notice from Microsoft that it wasn't genuine disappeared. So I'll restart and see if it's really solved. Thanks.

Yup. Restarted and no black screen, no nasty notice. Thanks a bunch for answering.

Hi

You got the non-genuine because the install media you used wasnt HP branded
Quite a common situation.

The key present on your system now should STILL be

please rerun the tool
